READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

DAVID READ3

61. DAVID READ3 (Joseph Read, II2, Joseph Read1) was born circa 1799 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died after 14 August 1862 possibly in Stueben County, New York. In August 1822, David Read presented a petition to the Sussex County Orphans Court for division of his father's real estate. Joseph Read had died intestate on 11 November 1806. Each of Joseph's five sons was due a portion of the family's 161.1 acre farm which was located in Knowlton Township in Sussex County. David petitioned the court because the five brothers (David, Stephen, John, Daniel and Joseph) "hold the same as tenants in common and by reason of the minority of some of the said children no division can be made by agreement between the said petitioner and the other children." The court appointed John Armstrong, Abraham Newman and William Cook, Esquire as commissioners to make the division. David recieved 30 acres as his share of the division (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, Division Book B, page 250).

David married by 1837, Anna (Last Name Unknown. She was born circa 1806 in New Jersey and died unknown. David initially settled in Ohio. His first child was born there in about 1837. David's stepfather/uncle, James Giles Newman and David's aunt Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Predmore Newman had also settled in Ohio. In addition, several of David's Kirkpatrick first cousins were living in Ohio (Armstrong 1979). They were the children of his uncle and aunt, Andrew and Phebe (Read) Kirkpatrick. David and Anna remained in Ohio for an unknown length of time. Between 1837 and 1840 they left Ohio and settled in Bath Township, Steuben County, New York near David's brother Daniel Read. The couple was living in Bath at the time of the 1840 census (United States Federal Census, Town of Bath, Steuben County, New York, page 276). David was a carpenter. In 1850, he and Anna still lived in the town of Bath. No value was given for real estate, hence it is possible that they did not own land (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Bath, Steuben County, New York, page 211).

David appeared as an heir in the settlement of the estate of his first cousin John H. Read3 (James Read2, Joseph Read1), who died intestate, without immediate family on 14 August 1862. The Warren County Surrogate Court named John H. Read's 66 surviving first cousins as his heirs. As David Read is included in the settlement, it is assumed that he died after John H. Read (Warren County, New Jersey, Surrogate Court Records, Orphans Court Minutes).
