READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
DANIEL VAUGHN READ3
62. DANIEL VAUGHN READ3 (Joseph Read, II2, Joseph Read1) was born 17 September 1804 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 4 April 1885 in Stueben County, New York (Stueben County New York, GenWeb; Kern 1938). In August 1822, Daniel's brother, David Read, presented a petition to the Sussex County Orphans Court for division of his father's real estate. Joseph Read had died intestate on 11 November 1806. Each of Joseph's five sons was due a portion of the family's 161.1 acre farm which was located in Knowlton Township in Sussex County. David petitioned the court because the five brothers (David, Stephen, John, Daniel and Joseph) "hold the same as tenants in common and by reason of the minority of some of the said children no division can be made by agreement between the said petitioner and the other children." The court appointed John Armstrong, Abraham Newman and William Cook, Esquire as commissioners to make the division. Daniel recieved 27.1 acres as his share of the division (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, Division Book B, page 250).
Daniel migrated to New York in 1825 when he was 21 years old (Kern 1938). He settled in the Town of Bath, where he became a farmer. Daniel married Louisa Smith in New York. She was born 21 April 1804 in Massachusetts and died 18 November 1895 in Steuben County, New York. In 1830 there were six individuals residing in Daniel's household:

In 1850, Daniel and Louisa lived in the Town of Bath in Steuben County. They owned their farm, which was valued at $6,000. The couple had seven children living with them. Daniel and his sons Stephen, Joseph and George were all listed as farmers. Six of the children—Joseph, George, Mary, Elizabeth, Semantha and Franklin—attended school during the 1850 census year (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Bath Steuben County, New York, page 208, 19 October 1850). By 1860, Stephen, Joseph and George Read had married. Mary Read was working as a domestic. During the 1860 census year she lived part of the year at her parents and the other part of the year in the household of her employers. Three of the Read children lived full time with Daniel and Louisa. They were Elizabeth, Semantha and Franklin. Elizabeth and Semantha were also employed as domestics. Franklin was employed as a farm laborer. None of the Read children were in school. Daniel and Louisa owned a farm in the Town of Savona, Stueben County, New York. Their real estate was valued at $12,000 and their personal estate was valued at $1,135 (1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Savona, Steuben County, New York, page 431). The household composition was a follows:

During the Civil War, two of the Read sons enlisted in the Union Army. Stephen Read was with the New York 161st Infantry, Company F. He was wounded in action at Cox's Plantation and died in January 1864 as a result of the wounds (Stueben County New York, GenWeb). Joseph Read was with the New York 16th Artillery, company H. He died 3 July 1864 at Fortress Monroe in Virginia. The other two Read sons did not fight in the war. George Read hired a sub named John C. Vail, who enlisted on 7 July 1863 (Stueben County, New York GenWeb). George probably stayed home to help with his two oolder brother's farms. Franklin Read was 16 or 17 years old when the war began and about 20 or 21 years old when it ended. He did not enlist.
By the time the 1880 census was enumerated, Daniel and Louisa were both 76 years old. Daniel was still a farmer. He and Louisa lived in the Town of Bath, Steuben County. Only one of the Read children still lived at home, 41 year old Elizabeth, who appears to have been caring for her elderly parents.

CHILDREN OF DANIEL AND LOUISA READ
2722. (i.) Pvt. STEPHEN S. READ4, was born circa 1828 in New York, probably in Bath Township, Steuben County and died 23 January 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee of wounds received at the battle of Cox Plantation. He appears to have been named for his Uncle Stephen Read, who lived in Hope, New Jersey. In 1850, he lived at home with his parents on their farm in the Town of Bath. Stephen's occupation was given as "farmer" (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Bath, Steuben County, New York, page 208, 19 October 1850). He married on 30 December 1852, Elizabeth Monell. The wedding was announced in the Stueben Farmer's Advocate on 26 January 1853. It was held at the house of Peter Monell and was performed by the Rev. David Nutten. In 1860, the couple resided in th Town of Bath. Stephen (listed as S.S. Read in the census) was a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $2,000 and had a personal estate with a value of $600. The farm was located outside the coporate limits of Bath proper (which was the post office). He and Elizabeth did not have children in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Bath, Steuben County, New York, page 502, 7 July 1860). On 20 September 1862, Stephen enlisted in the New York 161st Infantry, Company F. He was wounded in action at Cox's Plantation and died in January 1864 as a result of the wounds (Stueben County New York, GenWeb). Elizabeth applied for a pension in 1865 (application #84536, certificate 54245).

In 1850, Joseph resided with his parents in the Town of Bath, Steuben County, New York. The census gives his occupation as "farmer" and indicates that he was still attending school (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Bath Steuben County, New York, page 208, 19 October 1850). He married Elizabeth (Last Name Unknown). She was born in New York circa 1831. In 1860, the couple lived in the Town of Howard, Stueben County, New York. Joseph was a farmer who owned real estate valued at $2,400. His personal estate was valued at $455 (1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Howard, Steuben County, New York, page 112). During the Civil War, Joseph enlisted as a private in the New York 16th Artillery, company H. He died during the war at Fortress Monroe in Virginia. The family erected a monument for him in Sherer Cemetery, Kamona, Howard Township, Steuben County, New York (Stueben County GenWeb). It is not known whether his remains were buried in Virginia, or if they were shipped home for burial (the former seems more likely). Elizabeth applied for a widow's pension on 27 January 1865 (application #80675 and certificate #62952). She remarried between 1865 and 1870. Her second husband was George Shereer. He was a farmer who lived in the Town of Addison, Steuben County. His farm was valued at $1200 and his personal estate at $300 (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Addison, Steuben County, New York, page 384, 23 July 1870). According to the 1860 census, she was 24 years old, single and employed as a domestic servant. The 1860 census lists her as a resident of her parents' household in the Town of Savona, Steuben County. A Mary Read, age 24, also appears as a domestic servant in the household of L.C. Whiting of the Town of Bath. Whiting was a wealthy merchant. He lived with his wife, Helen and son William, as well as M.B. Ward (age 67), who was described as a "Lady". The Whitings employed four domestic servants: Mary Read, Julia Tracy, Catherine Sexton, and J. Vanderhoven (the only male). All of the servants were between 20 and 25 years of age.
