HANNAH MANNING PRICE3
10. HANNAH MANNING3 (Sarah Read2, Joseph Read1)
born circa 1809, in Ulysses, Seneca County, New York and died after 1870, probably in Indiana (1850 United States Federal Census, page 490A; 1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana; Kern 1938; Stewart 1998). The 1850 and 1860 census give her birth place as New Jersey, but this seems unlikely. Her father appears on a list of potential jurors for the town of Ulysses, New York in 1803. In March 1804, he was selected as an Overseer of Highways and Fence Viewer for the Town of Ulysses (Stewart 2002). On 5 March 1805, Hannah's parents sold 57 1/2 acres of land located in the town of Ulysses to Joseph Manning (Seneca County, New York Deed Book, page 224). In addition, Ephraim is listed as the head of household on the 1810 census for Ulysses, Seneca County, New York (page 576). The 1870 census lists the birth place of Hannah's older sister Polly (born in circa 1807) as New York. It also lists the birth place of her younger sister Anna (born in circa 1811) as New York. It is possible that the Mannings returned to New Jersey between 1807 and 1809 and then went back to New Yok in 1810. However, this seems highly unlikely given the difficulties of long distance travel in the early nineteenth century. There were no trains and roads were often nothing more than dirt tracks. It is more plausible that the 1850 and 1860 census are in error concerning Hannah's place of birth. Eprhaim Manning died somtime after 1810 or 1811. Hannah's mother, Sarah Read Manning, took the family back to New Jersey after his death. The Mannings appear to be there by 1830. Hannah married by 1834, Jonah Price, the son of Robert Price and Jane Poyer. They were probably married in Warren County, New Jersey as the Price family resided in Warren County. Jonah was born in New Jersey on 25 April 1810 (1850 United States Federal Census page 490A; Price 2001; Stewart 2002) and died in Indiana sometime between 1860 and 1884 (Anon 1884). Hannah's sister Anna married Jonah's brother George in 1832. By 1834, Hannah and Jonah were living in Pennsylvania. Their oldest child, Amos, was born there in December (Stewart 2002). Between 1839 and 1840, the Prices moved to Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio. Jonah Price appears as the head of household in the 1840 census for Ripley Township (1840 United States Census, Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio, page 253). The family remained in Ohio until the late 1840s. They moved once more between 1847 and 1850 to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860, the Prices had moved north across the county line into Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). Hannah was still living on 14 August 1862 when her first cousin John Hetty Read died in Warren County, New Jersey. She is named in the settlement of his estate. Only John's living first cousins were named in the settlement, so it is assumed that Hannah died after John (WCSCR, Minutes).

1041. (i.) AMOS MANNING PRICE4, born 13 December 1834, in Pennsylvania (Stewart 2002; 1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870) and died unknown. His parents migrated to Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio between 1839 and 1840. Amos appears in the 1840 census (although not by name) as a free white male between the ages of 5 and 10. He would have been 6 years old when the census was taken (1840 United States Census, Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio, page 253). Between 1847 and 1850, Amos's family moved to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. Amos resided with his parents in 1850 and attended school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860, Amos's parents had moved north across the county line into Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. Amos was not a resident of his parents household when the 1860 census was enumerated (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). Amos married Mary Vermillion, the daughter of J. Vermillion and Mary McGrew. She was born circa 1844 in Jefferson County, Ohio (Stewart 2002). As their first child was born in Green Township 12 days after the 1860 census taker enumerated Amos's parents household, it is assumed that Amos and Mary had their own home in Marshall County, Indiana. In 1870, Amos and Mary lived in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. Amos Price was a farmer who owned real estate valued at $2000 and a personal estate valued at $50 (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). The Prices still lived on a farm in Green Township in 1880. Amos and Mary lived in dwelling 125 and were the 131st family enumerated by the census. Their son Robert E. Price lived with his wife Elizabeth in dwelling 123 and was family 129 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 & 12 July 1880). Child of Amos Price and Mary Vermillion:
2125. (i.) LAURA ELLEN PRICE 5, born 26 August 1860 in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died 20 January 1941 in Argos, Indiana. In 1870, Laura lived on her parents farm in Green Township and attended school (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). She married in November 1879, in Argos, Indiana Jasper Milburn Lake. According to Stewart (2002) the marriage date was 1 November, Marshall County Genweb gives the date as 2 November. Jasper was born 21 April 1850 in Argos, Indiana and died 21 January 1937 in Argos, Indiana. His parents were Elisha Lake and Loraine Norris (Stewart 2002). Lorraine and Elisha Lake were divorced in the 1860s. Lorraine filed the complaint on 29 July 1869 (Marshall County GenWeb). In 1880, Jasper and Laura lake lived in Green Township in Marshall County. Jasper was a carpenter and Laura was keeping house. Florence A. Norris, 19 year old school teacher was living with the couple. Jasper and Laura did not have any children of their own. Laura and Japser lived in part of Jasper's mother's house. The 1870 census enumerated Lorraine Lake (age 63) and her son Marquis L. Lake (age 28) as family number 146 in dwelling 139. Jasper and Laura Lake were family number 147 in dwelling 139. Laura's father and mother lived nearby in dwelling 125 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 207L, 14 & 15 June 1880). Children of Laura Price and Jasper Lake:

2134. (viii.) OLIVE BEATRICE LAKE6, born and died unknown (Stewart 2002).
2160. (ii.) GEORGE A. PRICE 5, born circa 1862 possibly in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, George lived on his parents farm in Green Township and attended school (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). George was still a resident of his parent's household in 1880. The census listed his occupation as "works on farm" (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 &12 June 1880).
2161. (iii.) ROSETTA PRICE 5, born circa 1864 possibly in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, Rosetta lived on her parents farm in Green Township and attended school (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). By 1880, Rosetta was no longer attending school, she still resided with her parents in Green Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 &12 June 1880).
2162. (iv.) ROBERT WALLACE PRICE 5, born circa 1867 possibly in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, he was listed as "Wallace" on the census. Wallace lived on his parents farm in Green Township. He was still too young to attend school (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). The 1880 census lists him as "Robert W." He lived with his parents in Green Township. The census gave his occupation as "works on a farm" (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 &12 June 1880). Robert W. Price married Laura I. Warren on 24 September 1888 in Fulton County, Indiana (Fulton County Marriages, Book E, page 233).
2163. (v.) JAMES O. PRICE 5, born circa 1869 possibly in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, James lived on his parents farm in Green Township. He was still too young to attend school (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). In 1880, James still resided with his parents in Green Township. The census listed his occupation as "works on a farm" (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 &12 June 1880).
2164. (vi.) HARRY M. PRICE 5, born circa 1879 possibly in Argos, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, Harry resided with his parents in Green Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 &12 June 1880).
1042. (ii.) SARAH J. PRICE4, born circa 1837, in Pennsylvania and died unknown. His parents migrated to Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio between 1839 and 1840. Sarah appears in the 1840 census (although not by name) as a free white female under the age of 5. She would have been 3 years old when the census was taken (1840 United States Census, Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio, page 253). In circa 1850, the Price family moved to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. Sarah resided with her parents in 1850 and attended school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860, the Prices had moved north, across the county line into Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. However, Sarah was not a resident of her parents' household in 1860 (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). I believe that Sarah J. Price was the wife of John Rolff (or Rolph).. Sarah and John lived in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. John was born in Indiana in circa 1837. He was a farmer, but does not appear to have owned any land. The 1870 census gives no real estate value, but does list a personal estate valued at $300. The census was states that he could not read or write (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 130L, 16 July 1870). Sarah was born in circa 1837. The 1870 census gives her place of birth as Pennsylvania, which matches the known data for Sarah J. Price. In addition, the children in the household (in 1880) included Sarah's son, George B. Price (born circa 1861), two other sons named Jonah Ellsworth Rolff (born circa 1867) and Amos Rolff (born circa 1870) and a daughter named Eliza A. Rolff. All of these children had common Price family names. Finally, The Argos Reflector reported the death of A. Rolff (Amos Rolff), nephew of J.W. Price (John W. Price) on 5 March 1914 (Marshall County GenWeb). John W. PRice was Sarah Price's younger brother. Sarah was a widow by 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880). George B. Price does not appear to be the son of John Rolff. He may have been Sarah's illegitimate child, or she may have been married to one of her cousins prior to her marriage to John Rolph. Child of Sarah J. Price by unknown:
2165. (i.) GEORGE B. PRICE 5, born circa 1861 possibly Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, George resided with his mother and step-father, John Rolph, in Green Township. He attended school that year (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 130L, 16 July 1870). George was still living with his mother in 1880. The census gives his place of birth as Ohio (the 1870 census gives his place of birth as Indiana). According to the census George's father was born in New Jersey and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. John Rolph, his probable step-father, was born in Indiana. It appears likely that George was a child from an earlier marriage. The 1880 census also states that George was unable to write. He was able to read (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
Children of Sarah J. Price and John Rolff:
2166. (ii.) JAMES ROLFF 5, born circa 1862 in Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, James resided with his parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. He attended school that year (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 130L, 16 July 1870). He was not a resident of his mother's household in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880). Given the spacing of 5 years between James and the next child, Jonah, it is possible that James was not Sarah's child and was a child of an earlier marriage of John Rolph, this is pure speculation and needs to be verified.
2167. (iii.) JONAH ELLSWORTH ROLFF 5, born circa 1867 in Indiana and died unknown. In 1870, Jonah resided with his parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 130L, 16 July 1870). The 1870 census gives his name as "Elsworth", while the 1880 census gives his name as "Jonah E." He was a resident of his mother's household in 1880. The census gives his occupation as "laborer" (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
2168. (iv.) AMOS WILLIAM ROLFF 5, born December 1869 in Indiana and died March 1914. The 1870 census lists his age as five months, while the 1880 census gives his age as 10. His name on the 1870 census as given as "William", the 1880 census gives his name as "Amos". The 1880 census appears to be listing the first name of the children, while the 1870 census appears to have listed the name by which the family called the child. For example in 1870 Jonah Elsworth was named as "ELsworth", but in 1880 he was listed as "Jonah E.). The girls were listed as Eliza A. and Phebe E. Only Amos is listed without a middle initial in 1880. On both the 1870 and 1880 census, Amos resided with his parents (widowed mother in 1880) in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 130L, 16 July 1870; 1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
2169. (v.) ELIZA A. ROLFF 5, born circa 1873 in Indiana and died unknown. She resided with her widowed mother in 1880 in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
2170. (vi.) PHEBE E. ROLFF 5, born circa 1876 in Indiana and died unknown. She resided with her widowed mother in 1880 in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
1043. (iii.) ROBERT E. PRICE4, born circa 1840, in Pennsylvania (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). Robert was the last of Jonah and Hannah Price's children to be born in Pennsylvania. His parents migrated to Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio shortly after his birth. Robert appears in the 1840 census (although not by name) as a free white male under the age of 5. He would have been an infant when the census was taken (1840 United States Census, Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio, page 253). In circa 1850, the Price family settled in Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. Robert resided with his parents in 1850 and attended school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860, the Prices had once again moved. This time they moved north across the county line into Green Township in Marshall County, Indiana. Robert Resided with his parents in 1860. He was 21 years, single, and employed as a farm laborer (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). On 25 January 1862, Robert E. Price of Fulton County, Indiana married Rosannah Miller, also of Fulton County (Fulton County Marriages Book B, page 153). A second marriage is listed for Robert Price on 12 January 1867 to Elizabeth Johnson (Fulton County Marriages, Book B, page 389). Elizabeth is listed as Robert's wife on the 1870 census. She was born circa 1849 in Ohio. Her father was from New York and her mother was from Pennsylvania. In 1870, Robert and Elizabeth lived in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. They owned a farm valued at $2400 and a personal estate valued at $600. They did not have children in 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). In 1880, the Prices were still in residents of Green Township. By 1880, they had one child. Also living in the household were 19 year old William Sturason, a laborer and 21 year old Lizzie Sturason, a domestic servant. Robert and Elizabeth Price lived in dwelling 79 and were the 79th family enumerated. William and Elizabeth Johnson, who were possibly kin of Elizabeth Johnson Price, lived in dwelling 80 and were family number 80 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 206R, 11 & 12 July 1880).
2171. (i.) ELIZA E. PRICE 5, born circa 1872, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, she resided with her parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 205L, 9 June 1880).
1044. (iv.) GEORGE PRICE4, born circa 1842, probably in Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio and died unknown. George was the first of the Price children born in Ohio. In circa 1850, the Price family moved to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. George resided with his parents in 1850 and attended school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860, the Prices had moved north across the county line into Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. However, George, who was 18 years old, was not living in his parents' household in 1860 (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). A George B. Price, age 18, does appear on the 1860 census for Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio. This individual was the head-of-household. He owned a farm valued at $3000 and had a personal estate valued at $500. According to the census, George B. Price was born in circa 1842 in New Jersey. Other members of the household included Isaac M. Price (age 26) and Mary Jane (Price) Mackey (age 23), who were the children of George B. and Anna (Manning) Price. Mary Jane Mackey's husband, Abraham, and her year old daughter, Anna Jane, also lived in the household. Eighteen year old George B. Price lived in dwelling number 413 and head family number 413. George B. and Anna Price lived in dwelling number 412 and were family number 412. The younger George B. Price was not the son of George B. and Anna Price. They had a 17 year old son named George Warren Price who lived with them in 1860 (1860 United Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). Whether 18 year old George B. Price was in fact the son of Jonah and Hannah Price, or was one of the sons of Jonah Price's other brothers is unclear at this time.
1045. (v.) JOHN W. PRICE4, born circa 1845, probably in Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio and died unknown. In circa 1850, the Price family moved to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. John resided with his parents in 1850, but was too young to attend school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). He was still living with his parents in 1860. By that time the Prices had moved north across the county line into Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. John lived on his parents farm and attended school in 1860 (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). In 1870, John lived with his wife Jemima (Last name unknown). She was born in Indiana in circa 1844. John was a farm laborer. John and Jemima lived with John's parents, Jonah and Hannah Price and with John's brother Silas (and his wife, Jemima) and sister, Eliza A. Price (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). John's wife Jemima appears to have died by 1880. The 1880 census lists John's wife as Phebe Williams, a widow (her maiden name is unknown). She was born circa 1843 in Indiana. She had at least one son by her first marriage, Howard Williams, who was born circa 1866 in Indiana. He lived in the Price household in 1880. The 1880 census lists John's occupation as "famer" (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 202R, 4 June 1880). Children of John W. Price (mother unknown):
2172. (i.) ROBERT F. PRICE 5, born circa 1874, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, he resided with his parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 202R, 4 June 1880).
2173. (ii.) LORA M. PRICE 5, born circa 1878, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, she resided with her parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 202R, 4 June 1880).
2100. (vi.) SILAS D. PRICE4, born circa 1848, probably in Ripley Township, Holmes County, Ohio and died unknown. In circa 1850, the Price family moved to Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. Silas resided with his parents in 1850, but was too young to attend school (1850 United Federal Census, Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana, page 474R, 3 October 1850). By 1860 the Prices were residing on a farm in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, which was just north of Richland Township in Fulton County. Silas lived with his parents and attended school in 1860 (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). Silas married during the 1870 census year. He and his new wife Jemima (Last name unknown) lived with Silas's parents whern the census was enumerated. Silas was listed as a farmer in the census (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870). By 1880, Silas and Jemima Price lived on their own farm in Green Township. Jemima was born in circa 1858 in Indiana, both of her parents were born in Ohio. The Prices had 3 children in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 200R, 1 June 1880). Children of Silas and Jemima Price:
2174. (i.) IRA PRICE 5, born circa 1870, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, he resided with his parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 200R, 1 June 1880).
2175. (ii.) EMMA PRICE 5, born circa 1872, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, she resided with her parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 200R, 1 June 1880).
2176. (iii.) SALINA PRICE 5, born circa 1879, in Indiana and died unknown. In 1880, she resided with her parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana (1880 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 200R, 1 June 1880).
1056. (vii.) ELIZA A. PRICE4, born circa 1852, probably in Richland Township, Fulton County, Indiana and died unknown. Eliza's birth place is listed on the 1860 census as Ohio. However, she does not appear on the 1850 census, which was enumerated after her parents had left Ohio and settled in Richland Township in Fulton County, Indiana. It appears that the 1860 census was in error. The 1870 census does list her place of birth as Indiana. In 1860, Eliza lived with her parents in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana and attended school (1860 United Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 721R, 14 August 1860). She was still single and a resident of her parents household in 1870. The census lists her occupation as "assisstant house keeper". Two of Eliza's brothers and their wives also lived in the household in 1870. They were John W. and Jemima Price and Silas D. and Jemima Price (1870 United States Federal Census, Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana, page 132R, 21 July 1870).
