READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
ANNA MANNING PRICE3
68. ANNA MANNING3 (Sarah Read2; Joseph Read1)
born circa 1811, in Ulysses, Seneca County, New York and died 22 March 1877, in Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio (1850 United States Federal Census, page 490A; Anon 1884; Kern 1938; Stewart 1998). Anna's father, Ephraim Manning died sometime between 1810 and 1819. He mother, Sarah Read Manning, returned to her original home in Warren County, New Jersey. The Mannigs were in New Jersey by 1830 (1830 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 381). Anna married in Warren County, New Jersey on 8 September 1832, George Banghart Price, the son of Robert Price and Jane Poyer. Anna's sister Hannah married George's brother Jonah by 1834. Anna and George were married by the Rev. Jonathan S. Thompson, pastor of the Christian Church in Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The following year, Jonathan Thompson married Anna's first cousin, Jane Read, the widow Drake3 (Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1). George Price was born in Warren County, New Jersey on 18 June 1812 and died after 1884 in Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio (Anon 1884:828). The Prices lived in New Jersey during the early years of their marriage. At least three of their first four children (Isaac, Aaron, Mary Jane) were born there. In 1838, the Prices headed west with Anna's sisters, brothers and parents. The Price children were very young, Isaac was about 7, Aaron was about 5, and Mary Jane was about 3. Their daughter Sarah was born either in New Jersey or Ohio. The census gives her birth date as circa 1839. She could have been born in 1838 or 1839 in either New Jersey or in Ohio. The Prices settled in Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Anna's mother, Sarah (Read) Manning, both her brothers, Amos and Isaac Manning, and her sister, Polly Manning, appear to have resided next door to the Prices. They are listed next to each other in the 1840 census (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 32). The Prices lived in Cass Township until about 1846. They sold their farm and moved to Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, which was the county adjacent to Hancock County. At least three of their children were born in Cass Township: Margaret (circa 1841), George Warren (circa 1843) and Hannah (March 1845). According to The History of Wyandot County, Ohio (Anon 1884:828) "Mr. Price has suffered many hardships, but has accumulated considerable property, having given liberally to his children. In 1846, he began life in the woods with a large family, cleared thirty-five acres for the use of it seven years, and then moved to his present place of residence." The biography further states that "He purchased 120 acres of land where he now resides, and which is tilled by his son-in-law, Mr. George F. Rapp, who was married to Laura E. Price July 11, 1870." It appears from the foregoing that the Prices owned two farms in Eden Township. The first farm was occupied from 1846 to about 1852. In 1852, they bought the 120 acre farm. The last three Price children, Eliza Charity (1848), John Manning (circa 1850) and Laura Ellen Price (circa 1852) were born in Eden Township. The first two were born on the first farm. Laura could have been born on either farm. The 1850, 1860 and 1870 census place the Prices in Eden Township (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860; 1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 714L, 24 July 1870). Anna is named in the settlement of the estate of her first cousin, John Hetty Read. He died intestate on 14 August 1862 in Warren County, New Jersey. John died without a surviving wife, children, siblings or parents. The Surrogate of Warren County ordered that his estate be divided between his 77 surviving first cousins (Read and Coleman descendants). Anna, as the daughter of Sarah Read Manning was entitled to 1/77 of the estate. According to The History of Wyandot County, Ohio, which was published in 1884, Anna died on 22 March 1877 (page 828). However, the biography of her son-in-law, Edwin S. Willson (husband of Eliza Price), places her death on 22 March 1878 (Anon page 1062). George Price "served as Constable [of Eden Township] several years, and is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church, of which his wife also was a faithful member" (Anon 1884:828). George lived with his daughter Laura Rapp and her family after the death of Anna. He appears on the 1880 census as the head of the household. Other members of the houshold included George and Laura Ellen (Price) Rapp and four of their children (John, Ida, Rosy, and Roy). George was listed as a farmer (1880 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 528L, 4 June 1880). He died sometime after 1884 (Anon 1884:828).Return to Main

1046. (i.) Private ISAAC MANNING PRICE4, born circa 1833 in New Jersey, probably in Warren County and died 11 March 1864 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. In 1838, when Isaac was about 5 years old, the Price family migrated to Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio (anon 1884). Isaac appears as a resident of his parents household on the 1840 census (although not by name). He is listed as a male between the ages of 5 and 10 years of age (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio). In about 1845, the Price family sold their farm in Cass Township and moved across the border into Eden Township (anon 1884). The 1850 census places Isaac in his parents household in Eden Township. He was 16 years old and was still attending school. The census gives his occupation as laborer (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850). By 1860, Isaac had moved out of his parents household. He lived in a houshold headed by 18 year old George B. Price. George was probably Isaac's cousin. Isaac's sister Mary Jane (Price) Mackey also lived in the household, along with her husband Abraham and their one year old daughter, Anna Jane. Isaac was still single in 1860. The census does not list an occupation (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). During the Civil War, Isaac enlisted on 15 August 1862 as a private in the 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company A. He died during the war on 15 August 1862 in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
1047. (ii.) Private AARON REED PRICE4, born circa 1835 in New Jersey, probably in Warren County (Price 2001; Stewart 2002) and died 19 September 1864, Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (probablay in Camp Parole). In 1838, when Aaron was about 3 years old, the Price family migrated to Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio (Anon 1884). Aaron appears as a resident of his parents household on the 1840 census (although not by name). He is listed as a male between the ages of 5 and 10 years of age (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 32). In about 1846, the Price family sold their farm in Cass Township and moved across the border into Eden Township (Anon 1884). The 1850 census places Aaron in his parents household in Eden Township. He was 14 years old and was still attending school (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850). By 1860, Aaron was married to Melie Walton?. She was born in circa 1843 in Ohio. Aaron and Melie and their one year old daughter, Evy Anne lived in Eden Township. They lived with John Walton, a 30 year old farmer who appears to have been Melie's brother. Aaron was a carpenter. He did not own any real estate, nor did he have a personal estate listed in the census. The Walton/Price household lived in dwelling 411 and was family 411. Isaac and Margaret Walton (ages 28 and 20 respectively) lived in dwelling 410. Aaron's parents, George B. and Hannah Price, lived in dwelling 412; Aaron's brother Isaac Price and sister Mary Jane Mackey lived in dwelling 413; and his sister Sarah and her husband, John Mackey, Jr., lived in dwelling 414. (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). Aaron enlisted during the Civil Ware as a private in the 144th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. H. The 144th OVI was a 90 day unit recurited toward the end of the war. Aaron was mustered in 2 May 1864. He served with his second cousin, William Darius Lanterman4 who was born in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, but who had migrated to Ohio in the 1860s. Aaron R. Price was captured on 13 August 1864 by Mosby's Raiders (Confederates) outside of Berryville, Virginia while guarding a wagon train. Mosby's men mounted the prisoners on mules and led them off from Berryville. On the night of 16 August 1864, the Confederates and their prisoners were near Snicker's Gap, Virginia. The Confederates rode ahead of their prisoners and lost sight of them. Many of the Union prisoners escaped into the woods and made it back to Union lines. Aaron Price was probably in this group. He made his way back to Maryland and died in the Union camp in Parole, which was on the west side of Annapolis (Masters 2002). The site of the camp and hospital at Parole is currently under the Sears Shopping Center on Solomons Island Road in Parole. During the War the Union established a cemetery in Annapolis. The Annapolis National Cemetery is located on West Street in Annapolis. Aaron was probably buried in the National Cemetery. Child of Aaron Price and Melie Walton:
1048. (iii.) MARY JANE PRICE4, born circa 1837 in New Jersey, probably in Warren County and died unknown. In 1838, when Mary Jane was about a year old, the Price family migrated to Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio (anon 1884). Mary Jane appears as a resident of her parents household on the 1840 census (although not by name). She is listed as a female under the age of 5 years (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio). In about 1846, the Price family sold their farm in Cass Township and moved across the border into Eden Township (anon 1884). The 1850 census places Mary Jane in her parents' household in Eden Township. She was 13 years old, but she was not attending school. Her two older borthers, Isaac and Aaron, and her younger siblings, Sarah, Margaret and George, all attended school that year. There were two small children at home, Hannah and Eliza. It is possible that Mary Jane's mother was expecting her youngest son, John Manning Price, at the time. Mary Jane's help may have been needed at home and she had stopped going to school (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850). Mary Jane married in Eden Township on 3 January 1857, Abraham Mackey. He was the son of John and Jane (Nesbit) Mackey and was born 31 July 1829 in Belmont County, Ohio (Anon 1884). The 1860 census gives his place of birth as Virginia. It also gives his father's birth place as Virginia. His mother was deceased by 1860, her place of birth is not known. In 1860, Abraham and Mary Jane (Price) Mackey lived on a farm in Eden Township. They shared their home with Mary Jane's brother, Isaac Manning Price and a cousin, George B. Price. They lived in dwelling 413 and were family 413. Abraham's father, John Mackey, Sr. lived in dwelling 414. Also residing in dwelling 414 were Abraham's 29 year old sister, Mary Mackey and his 26 year old borther, John Mackey, Jr. The later was married to Mary Jane's younger sister, Sarah E. Price. Mary Jane's parents, George B. and Hannah Price lived in dwelling 412 (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L and 428R, 26 July 1860). According to The History of Wyandot County, Ohio (1884:825), "Mr. Mackey inherited eighty-six acres of land from his father's estate, and upon this farm he has established a comfortable home. He has engaged in agricultural pursuits about thirty-one years, and has his farm stocked with the best grades of stock. He favors Republicanism, and with his wife is a member of the Methodist Protestant Church." Children of Abraham and Anna Jane Mackey:

She was the youngest member of the Price family when the census was taken. She lived with her parents in Eden Township (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850). By 1860, Eliza was 12 and was attending school. She was still a resident of her parents household (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). She married in Ohio on 1 March 1866, Edwin Samuel Willson, the son of Jacob Lundy Willson and Bathsheba Pound Shotwell. He was born 16 February 1846 in in Wynadot County, Ohio and died 10 June 1928 in Wynadot County, Ohio (Anon 1884:825; Price 2001; Stewart 2002). The Willsons were Quakers. Jacob and Bathsheba are buried in the Quaker Cemetery in Tymochtee Township, Wyandot County, Ohio. During the Civil War, Edwin "enlisted February 20, 1864, in Company D, Forty-ninth Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry, and participated in several battles, among which are Dallas Mountain, Ga., May 5 to 27; Atlanta, Nashville, and a great many skirmishes. He was wounded at Dallas Mountain in the right side by a gunshot wound, and lay at the hospitals of Nashville and Murfreesboro, Tenn., till August. He then joined his regiment, and was again wounded December 16, and subsequently discharged from the Louisville Hospital May 27, 1865" (Anon 1884:828). On 1 March 1863, before he enlisted, Edwin's father Jacob L. Willson died. Jacob Willson left ihs son 40 acres of land. Edwin began by raising sheep, but evidently this did not go well. I suspect that his enlistment in the military in 1864 put a stop to his sheep farm. When he returned from the war, he turned to general farming. He and Eliza were married ten months after his discharge. According to The History of Wyandot County, Ohio (Anon 1884:825), Edwin had increased his holdings to 200 acres by 1884. 1054. (ix.) JOHN MANNING PRICE4, born circa 1850 in Eden Township, Wynadot County, Ohio (Price 2001; Stewart 2002) and died before 1884 (anon 1884). He does not appear on the 1850 census (1850 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, District 60, page 255B, 22 October 1850). He is on the 1860 census as a 10 year old school boy living in his parents household in Eden Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). John was 11 when the Civil War began, and about 15 when it ended. He probably did not serve in any of the Ohio Regiments. He was not a resident of parents' household in 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). John died before 1884, The History of Wyandot County, Ohio, which was published in 1884, states that John was deceased (page 828 and 1062).
1055. (x.) LAURA ELLEN(?) PRICE4, born circa 1852 in Eden Township, Wynadot County, Ohio and died unknown. Stewart lists two children born after John Manning Price, Ellen born circa 1851 and Laura born circa 1852. I believe these two may be the same individual. Laura's name is given as Laura E in The History of Wyandot County, Ohio (1884:825 and 1062). On page 828 of the history it states: "To George B. and Anna Price were born ten children-Isaac M., Aaron R., Mary J., Sarah E., Margaret A., Hannah M., Eliza C., John M., Laura, Ellen and George W." If you count the number of children in the list just given, it comes out to 11 not 10. I think the coma between Laura and Ellen may be a typographical error. Laura's name is given as as Laura E. on page 1062 of the history and on the 1860 and 1870 census. I am currently assuming that Laura was Laura Ellen Price. The bio also puts George W. Price at the end of the list, but the census places him as the sixth child of George and Anna Price, not as the tenth. Laura was the youngest child listed on the 1860 census for the Price household. She was 8 years old and attending school. She lived on parents farm in Eden Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 428L, 26 July 1860). In 1870, Laura still lived with her parents in Eden Townsip. According to the census, she was 18 years old and had been married in May of 1870. The History of Wyandot County, Ohio (1884:825) places her marriage to George F. Rapp on 11 July 1870. In the 1870 census, Laura and her parents lived in swelling 149 and were family number 139 (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). Laura's husband lived in dwelling 160 with family number 150. They were the Bambles and George was their hired man. George was 26 years old. He had been born in Ohio in about 1844. According to the census both his parents were foreign born. George could read, but he could not write. He owned a personal estate valued at $125 (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 709L, 21 July 1870). He may be related to an Anna M. Rapp who lived in Eden Township in dwelling 240 (famiy 226). Anna was a 57 year old widow, born circa 1813 in Wurtemberg, Germany. She had two of her sons living with her in 1870, Jacob (born circa 1839 in Ohio) and Solomon born circa (1846 in Ohio) (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 714L, 24 July 1870). Laura and George Rapp eventually settled with Laura's father on his farm in Eden Township. Laura's father owned 120 acres. He appears to have been retired by 1884 (he was 70 years old) and George was running the farm (Anon 1884:828). Children of Laura Price and George Rapp:
