ADA MINERVA READ VAN HORN5

711. . ADA MINERVA "MIINIE" READ5 ( Ira C. Read4, Martin Freese Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 29 March 1865 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509811; St. Johns of Hope Methodist Episcopal Church Yard) and died 1947. The 1870 census gives her name as "Addie M. Reed." This is the only time that her name appears as such. She was 5 years old in 1870 and had not yet started to attend school (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 182A, 16 August 1870). In 1880, Minnie lived with her parents in Hope Township. She attended school during the school year. Minnie eventually became a school teacher. She married circa 1890, Richard Marshall Van Horn, son of Isaac H. Van Horn and Rebecca Stillwell. He was born 1854 on a farm near Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1912. Snell's history of Warren County includes a biography of Richard's brother, T.S. Van Horn who was a merchant in Hackettstown, Warren County, New Jersey. According to Snell (1881:592B), Richard was "pursuing legal studies at Belvidere, N.J." in 1881. Nine years later, he married Minnie Read. The couple resided in the Village of Hope in 1900. Richard was a school teacher. Ada was at home raising their 4 year old son Forrest. The couple owned their home, but it was mortgaged (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 11A, 25 June 1900). In 1910, Richard and Minnie lived on the Bridgeville Road in Hope Township, Warren County. They owned their home free and clear of any mortgages. Both Richard and Minnie were teachers. The census indicates that they had a total of two children, both of whom were living in 1910 (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 15A, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15A, 9 May 1910). Richard died in 1912. By 1920, both of Minnie's children had left her home. Forrest's where-abouts are unknown, but Irene was living in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. In 1920, Minnie was still a school teacher and worked in the public schools. She lived in the town of Hope (1920 United States Census, Enumeration District 159, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 23 January 1920). By 1930, Minnie had retired from teaching school. She supported herself by housekeeping for a private family. She owned her home, which was valued at $2000. She also owned a radio. Minnie lived alone, none of her children were in the house (1930 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-11, sheet 6B, 16 April 1930). Although she lived alone, Minnie's children did come to visit her. The Blairstown Press reported on 7 June 1934, in the "Hope" gossip section of the paper that "Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Van Horn of Morris Plains spent Saturday with his mother, Mrs. Minnie R. Van Horn." Her daughter Irene was married to Alexander Himes in Minnie's home on Saturday, 11 September 1937 (Blairstown Press, 23 September 1937). Minnie died ten years after Irene was married (1947) at the age of 81 or 82 years. She was buried in St. Johns of Hope Methodist Episcopal Church Yard, Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey next to Richard.

The house she lived in was rented by Edward Page (age 52) an accountant in one of the city's cotton mills. The house was divided into two dwellings. Edward Page, his wife Mary (age 49), son Laurence B. (age 16) and their roomer Anna M. Morrison (age 78), an English nurse, lived in one side of the house.
