MICHAEL VAUGHN4 (Samuel Vaughn3, Hannah Read2, Joseph1), was born 1814 in Knowlton (now Blairstown) Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey, the eldest of the 12 children of Samuel Vaughn and Anna Raub (Kern 1938, Chemung County, New York GenWeb). He was named after his maternal grandfather Michael Raub. He migrated to Tompkins (now Schuyler County) in 1817 with his parents (Child 1893:108). Michael was three when the move was made. He grew up on his parents's farm in the Town of Hector. Michael appears as a male child in the household of Samuel Vaughn on the 1820 and 1830 United States Federal Census and on the 1825 New York State Census (1820 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, page 5; 1826 New York State Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York (Chemung County, New York GenWeb); 1830 United States Federal Census, Town of Hector, Tompkins County, New York, page 396).
Michael married by 1838, Eliza H. Thompson (Kern 1938). She was born circa 1817 in New York and died 4 September 1890, age 73 in Big Flats, Chemung County, New York (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). In 1840, Michael and Eliza resided in the Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York. According to the census, there were three residents in the household, a male and a female between 20 and 30 years of age (Michael and Eliza) and a female under the age of 5 years (their infant daughter Mary). One person in the household was engaged in agriculture—Michael (1840 United States Federal Census, Northern District of New York, Town of Big Flats Chemung County, New York, pages 192).
In 1850, Michael and Eliza resided with their sons Erie and David, on a farm in the Town of Big Flats. Their daughter Mary had died in 1841(Chemung County, New York GenWeb). Their farm was valued at $2,300. Michael lived in dwelling 2182. His brother Wiliam Vaughn was in dwelling 2183 and his sister Hannah Strader lived in dwelling 2184 (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 282B, 23 October 1850). The Vaughn's son Edmund had been born by 1860. Michael and Eliza and their three sons lived on their farm in Big Flats. Their real estate was valued at $8,000 and their personal estate was valued at $1,800 (1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York). In 1870, Michael and Eliza still lived with their children in the Town of Big Flats, Chemung County. Michael was a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $11,000 and a personal estate valued at $3,600. Michael and Eliza lived in dwelling 315. Michael's brother William lived in dwelling 314 and his sister Hannah Strader lived in dwelling 323. Their post office was Big Flats, New York. In addition to their three sons, 11 year old Hatti Timms lived with the family and atttended school (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 46, 6 July 1870). Michael died five years later on 9 May 1875 in the Town of Big Flats (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). Eliza lived alone in 1880. She lived in dwelling 313. Her brother-in-law William Vaughn was in dwelling 311, her nephew Almain Vaughn was in dwelling 312, and her son Erie was in dwelling 314 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 65, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 185D, 16 June 1880). She died 4 September 1890, age 73 in Big Flats and was buried with Michael in Woodlawn Cemetery, City of Elmira, Chemung County (Chemung County, New York GenWeb).

2744. (i.) MARY M. VAUGHN5, was born 9 April 1840 in New York and died 25 August 1841 (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). Mary appears on the 1840 United States Federal Census as a female under the age of 5 living in Michael Vaughn's household in Big Flats, Chemung County, New York (1840 United States Federal Census, Northern District of New York, Town of Big Flats Chemung County, New York, pages 192). She died at the age of 1 year, 4 months and 16 days; and was buried in Tompkins Corners Cemtery, Catlin Township, Chemung County, New York ("Located on Holoman Hollow Road on Harris Hill, near Elmira, NY, this is a quarter mile straight back in the woods, with no road. It is completely abandoned and overgrown") (Chemung County, New York GenWeb).
2745. (ii.) ERIE J. VAUGHN5, was born circa 1845 in New York and died 17 February 1934 (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). . Erie lived with his parents on their farm in Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1850, 1860 and 1870. The 1850 census indicates that he attended school during that census year (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 282B, 23 October 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York; 1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 46, 6 July 1870). Erie married by 1880, Mary L. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1850 in New York. In 1880, they lived on a farm in Chemung County, New York (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 65, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 185D, 16 June 1880). The Elmira City Directory for the years 1882-84 (Cousins 1882), lists Erie as a farmer residing in West Elmira. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, City of Elmira, Chemung County (Chemung County, New York GenWeb).
2746. (iii.) DAVID L. VAUGHN5, was born circa 1849 in New York and died unknown. David lived with his parents on their farm in Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1850, 1860 and 1870 (1850 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 282B, 23 October 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York; 1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 46, 6 July 1870).
2747. (iv.) EDMUND M. VAUGHN5, was born circa 1856 in New York and died 16 November 1926 in Horseheads, New York. He was 70 years old. Edmund comitted suicide, he died as a result of a gunshot wound (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). David lived with his parents on their farm in Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1860 and 1870 (1860 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York; 1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 46, 6 July 1870). He married by 1880, Elizabeth (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1855 in New York and died 15 August 1889, age 34, in Elmira, Chemung County, New York (Chemung County, New York GenWeb). In 1880, Edmund and Elizabeth lived on a farm in Chemung County, New York (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 65, Town of Big Flats, Chemung County, New York, page 180A, 10 June 1880). Edmund and Elizabeth are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, City of Elmira, Chemung County (Chemung County, New York GenWeb).
