EMMARETTA OSMUN ALLEN4

776. EMMARETTA or EMMA OSMUN4 (Sarah Ann Read3. David Read2, Joseph Read1) 7 December 1852 in Hope Township, Warren County New Jersey and died 5 December 1935 (LDS Batch #C509811; Reuther n.d.). In 1860, Emmaretta lived with her parents and seven sisters and brothers on the family farm in Hope Township. Her siblings included her older sisters Elizabeth and Mary Adeline and her younger sister Sarah Ellen. Emmaretta had four brothers: Lemuel. Joseph, Alvah and Charles (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey). Emmaretta's father died in 1867, when she was about 14 and a half years old. In 1870, she was 17 years old and lived with her mother and her older brother Joseph and two younger brothers—Alvah and Charles—on their farm in Hope Township. The census listed her as "at home" (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 177A, 4 August 1870).

Emmaretta married by 1875, William Preston Allen. He was born 1847 in New Jersey and died 1901 (Reuther n.d.). By 1880 they had three sons: William C. (age 4), Charles O. (age 3) and Homer (age 1). No occupation is given on the 1880 census for William. The family lived in Hope Township near the village of Hope (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 417D).

The family does not appear on the 1900 census. William died in 1901 and was buried in Swayze Cemetery in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Emma appears to have lived with relatives after his death. In 1910, her 14 year old daughter Beatrice lived with the Allen's second son Charles and his wife Bertha. Beatrice may have moved in with her brother to help Bertha with the housework and with her four young sons. Bertha was probably expecting her fifth child (a daughter named Helen) when the census was enumerated (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 27 April 1910). By 1930, Emmaretta Osmun Allen was 77 year old. She lived with her son Charles and his wife Bertha on their farm in Hope Township. Five of Charles and Bertha's nine children lived at home in that year: Walter, John, Ada, Russell and Woodrow. Emmaretta's grandson Earl had died in 1923. The two older boys (James and Frank) and the eldest daughter (Helen) all appear to have been working out as farm laborers and domestic servants (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-11, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 7 April 1930). Emmaretta died in early December 1935 and was buried with her husband in Swyze Cemetery.
