READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

JOHN C. FLUMERFELT4

780. JOHN C. FLUMERFELT4 (Eleanor Flumerfelt, nee Read3; David Read2; Joseph Read1) was born 10 December 1851 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509811; Mt Hermon United Methodist Church Yard) and died 1928. The 1860 census lists John as a resident of his parents's household in Hope Township. John attended school with his sister Harriet. His younger sister Annie was still a baby and was too young to attend school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 8, 28 June 1860). In 1870, John still lived at home with his parents in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He was working as a farm laborer. At the age of 19, he was finished with his schooling (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 181A, 15 August 1870).

John married as his first wife Mary C. Allen, the eldest daughter of Aaron H. Allen and Rachel Cook (1860 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 20 July 1860, page 33). She was born 1849 and died 1900 (Mt Hermon United Methodist Church Yard). In 1880, John and Mary lived with John's father, Charles Flumerfelt and his sister Anna FLumerfelt on the family farm in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Charles's occupation was listed as "house carpenter," John C. Flumerfelt was listed as a "farmer," while Anna's was given as "keeping house" and Mary as "at home." However, there is a problem with the census. It incorrectly lists John's wife as Anna E. Flumerfelt. Anna was his sister. His wife, Mary Flumerfelt is incorrectly listed as Charles Flumerfelt's daughter. The ages are also wrong for the two women, Mary should be 30 and Anna E. should be 22. Given the mix-up it is probable that Mary's occupation should be "keeping house" and Anna's should be "at home" (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 415 D, 7 June 1880).

John bought land from Aaron Read, II 3 (Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) sometime before 1887. He is listed in Aaron's will as living on a parcel adjacent to Aaron's home lot. The Read home lot was in Mount Hermon. Aaron and John were first cousins once removed. John was also a witness to Aaron's will, which was written on 7 November 1887. The will was submitted for probate on 11 March 1898 (WCSCR Book 10, page 391). The 1900 census lists John as a resident of Hope Township, probably on the farm he had purchased from Aaron Read. John owned the farm free and clear of all mortgages. The 1900 census also lists John as a widower, his wife Mary had died earlier that year. He lived with his daughter Eva. The family had a housekeeper named Maggie M. Hoyt. She was born November 1857 in New Jersey. Maggie was a widow. She did not have children. John Flumerfelt is listed adjacent to his second cousin John C. Read4 (Samuel D. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) in the census. The Flumerfelts lived in dwelling 52, and the Reads were in dwelling 53 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900).

John Flumerfelt married second, on 12 November 1902, Hannah Howell (LDS Disc #2). Hannah's maiden name is unknown. She was born 20 February 1860 and died 29 August 1959. Hannah was the widow of Edward A. Howell (2 April 1854-10 February 1899), by whom she had one son, Turner Howell, who was born March 1888 (Howell and Phethean 2000:94). In 1910, John, Hannah and Eva (John's daughter by Mary) lived on the Mount Hermon Road in Hope township (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). Eva married Frank Hartung in 1915. in 1920, John and Hannah lived together on their farm in Hope Township. John was still employed as a farmer (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 157, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 8 January 1920).

John C. Flumerfelt died in 1928 and was buried with his first wife, Mary C. Allen in Mt Hermon Methodist Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (also known as Green's Chapel). Their son Aaron is buried with them. They share a stone with Mary's sister, Florence B. Allen Stinson (1858-1945), her husband Lewis T. Stinson (1853-1920) and their son William R. Stinson (1887-1892). Mary's parent's Aaron H. and Rachel (Cook) Allen are buried near the Flumerfelt plot. The graves were field checked on 24 March 2004. Photos of the graves are available in the family photo album section of this page. Hannah Howell Flumerfelt lived until 29 August 1959, and was buried in St John's Methodist Cemetery (also known as the old Moravian Cemetery) in Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Howell and Phethean 2000:94).

CHILDREN OF JOHN C. FLUMERFELT AND MARY ALLEN:

915. (i.) AARON A. FLUMERFELT5, was born 1884 and died 1886. He is buried in Mt Hermon Methodist Church yard, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (also known as Green's Chapel). His grave was field checked on 24 March 2004. A photo of the grave is available in the family photo album section of this page.

1026. (ii.) EVA L. FLUMERFELT5, was born April 1887 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 6 June 1946, in Mount Hermon, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She was probably named after her mother's sister, Eva Allen. Her mother, Mary C. Allen, died in 1900. Eva lived with her widowed father in 1900 and attended school during the 1900 school year. In 1910, she lived with her father and his second wife, Hannah, whom he had married in 1902 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 189, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900; 1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 4 May 1910). Eva married on 25 December 1917 in Mount Hermon at her parent's home, Frank Hartung, Sr. He was born in 1879 and died in 1928 (Reuther n.d.), the son of John R. and Sarah A. Hartung. A report of the wedding appeared in the Blairstown Press in late December 1915 or early January 1916:

A very pretty home wedding was solemized on Christmas Day at Mt. Hermon, when Miss Eva L. Flumerfelt, a Washington Township school teacher, became the wife of Frank L. Hartung, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Flumerfelt, who on the same day celeberated the 35th anniversary of their marriage, making the affair a double event.

The house was beautifully decorated with white festooning set off with touches of green and red Xmas trimming; while the ceremony took place beneath an arch of evergreen, in the center of which was a huge wedding bell of white.

The bride wore a gown of French voile and oriental lace, with Duchess satin and pearl trimmings, with a tulle veil. For her bouquet she carried pale lavender orchids and ferns. She was unattended was given away by her father. Ralph Holden acted as best man. Mrs. F. T. Howell of Sewaren played the wedding march from Lohengrin. The couple were the recipients of numerous wedding gifts.

After the wedding, escorted by their friends in automobiles, they boarded a train for the South, spending their honeymoon at Washingon, D.C. (Thanks to Alice Y. Lockburner for this article).

The report of the ceremony appears to have made one mistake. Eva's mother, Mary C. Allen Flumerfelt had been dead for 15 years when the wedding took place. Her father, John C. Flumerfelt, had married Hannah Howell in November 1902, a little over 13 years before the wedding. The paper may have meant that it was the 35th anniversary of Eva's biological parents John C. and Mary C. (Allen) Flumerfelt. The Mrs. F.T. Howell of Sewaren, was the wife of Eva's step-brother Tuner Howell.

In 1920, Frank and Eva lived with two of their three children in Blairstown Township. Frank was a farmer. The couple owned their farm, although it was mortgaged (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 5 January 1920). Frank died in 1928. In 1930, Eva was a widow living in Blairstown Township. She still owned the farm and was listed as a "farmer" in the 1930 census. Eva's three children lived with her. In addition to the children, she had three boarders, two men and a woman. The ink in the census copy I consulted was so faded, that I was unable to make out their names. The Hartung children were all in school. The family owned a radio in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 18 April 1930).

Eva appears in the local gossip column of the Blairstown Press for Mt Hermon and Knowlton in May and June 1934. In late May, Eva's cousin Mrs. J.E. Allen came to visit: "Mrs. J.E. Allen and daughter Grace and Mrs. Myrtle Burrough of East Orange and a party of friends from there held a picnic near Cedar Lake, Saturday, and afterwards called on Mrs. Allen's cousin, Mrs. Frank H. Hartung." The following day Eva visited another cousin in Sussex county: "Mrs. Frank H. Hartung was a Sunday guest of her cousin Mrs. Wilfred Hibler of Greendell" (24 May 1934). Two weeks later, her husband's family came to call: "Mr. and Mrs. William Cummiskey and Miss Sallie B.H. Riker of Newark spent a couple of days last week with their sister in-law, Mrs. Frank H. Hartung" (7 June 1934).

Eva died in 1946. Her son Frank Jr. had died in 1941. Eva and Frank, Sr. are buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Lockburner 2004). Eva's obituary appeared in the Easton Express on 7 June 1946:

"Mrs Eva L Hartung, 55 of Mount Hermon died at her home yesterday. She is the widow of Frank Hartung. She was a member of the Mt Hermon Methodist Church, Eastern Star of Blairstown and the Hope Grange. Surviving are one daughter, Helen Virginia Hartung, and a son Ralph at home: a step mother, Mrs Hannah Flumerfelt, and a step-brother Turner Howell of Sewaren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hiles funeral home, Great Meadows at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Robert J Luklens officiating." (Thanks to Alice Y. Lockburner for sending me the obituary).

Eva and Frank are buried in the family plot in Ramseyburg Cemetery with their son Frank, Jr.; Frank Sr's parents, his sister Elizabeth M. Hartung and his brothers Alpheus, Arthur , and Peter and Peter's wife Elizabeth C. Hartung. The cemetery is located in Ramseyburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Frank's grave was visitied 15 April 2005. Children of Eva L. Flumerfelt and Frank Hartung, Sr.:

2888. (i.) FRANK H. HARTUNG, Jr.6, was born circa 1916 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 5 October 1941, age 25 years. Frank lived on the family farm in 1920 and 1930. The 1920 census gives his age as 2 years, 11 months. In 1930, he was listed as attending school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 5 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 18 April 1930). Frank's obituary appeared in the Washington Star:

Frank H. Hartung, 25, Hope, died Sunday in the East Stroudsburg, PA., General Hospital after an illness of one week. He was a member of the Mt. Hermon Methodist Church and the Vail Grange. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Eva Hartung; a sister, Miss Virginia Hartung, and a brother, Ralph Hartung, all of Hope. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Mt. Hermon Church. Interment was at Delaware. (Thanks to Alice Y. Lockburner for this obituary!)

She lived on the Hartung family farm in 1920 and 1930. The 1920 census gives her age as 11 months. She attended school in 1930 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2A, 5 January 1920; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 18 April 1930).
