783. IRENE MARK DAVIS4, (Ann Read Davis3, Samuel Read, Esq.2, Joseph Read1), was born 13 January 1827, probably in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 7 November 1903 in New York (Kern 1938). Irene spent the early years of her life in Knowlton Township. Her family appears on the 1830 United States Federal Census as residents of the township (1830 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 379). By 1840, Mark and Ann Davis had moved to Harrison Township in Hudson County, New Jersey. The family operated an inn for drovers in Harrison (1840 United States Federal Census, Harrison Township, Hudson County, New Jersey, page 170; Kern 1938).
Irene married by 1848, George W. Cross (Kern 1938), the son of George A. Cross and Ruth Hatch. George A. Cross was born circa 1788 in New York and his wife Ruth Hatch was born 18 March 1791 in Tolland County, Connecticut. Their son George W. Cross was born 1825 in New Jersey and was one of at least four children (the other children were Isaac Cross, Abram Cross anad Caroline Cross). George A. Cross was a tailor turned merchant (Zipp n.d.). By 1850, he was retired, but he still had large real estate holding. The census valued his real estate at $7,000. George and Ruth lived in a bulding in Newark, which was also occupied by two other families. These were the famlies of their son George W. Cross and of Ezra P. Swain, a carpenter. George W. and Irene (Davis) Cross were the parents of two young sons in 1850—two year old Charles and three month old George. George W. Cross was a merchant.He owned real estate valued at $10,000. There were also several boarders and servants living in the household of George and Irene Cross. These individuals were 20 year old Ira Buster, a native of Germany who was employed as a clerk; 14 year old Michatl Gerwin from Ireland; and two young women who may have been domestic: Margaret Linman (age 18, born in Ireland) and Anna Thompson (age 22 and born in New York) (1850 United States Federal Census, North Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, page 6). George and Irene still lived in Newark in 1870. Four of their five shildren still lived at home: Charles, Annie, Henrietta and Mary. Charles was a law student, Annie and Henrietta were in school, and Mary, who was five years old, was at home. The family had a maid, 45 year old Mary Reilly, who was a native of Ireland. George Cross was retired by 1870. According to the census he had been both a dry goods merchant and a farmer. He owned real estate valued at $16,000 and had a personal estate valued at $1,000 (1870 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870). George and Irene lived at 702 Springfield Ave. in Newark in 1880. The couple's three daughters still lived with them. Henrietta was married to George T. Robinson, who was employed as a saleman in New York City. According to the census, George and Henrietta were "boarders." Annie Cross was 21 years old, she was not in school, nor did she work. Mary Cross was 15 years old and was attending school when the census was enumerated (1880 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, pages 465B-C, 2 June 1880). 2852. (i.) CHARLES A. CROSS5, was born circa 1848 in New Jersey, probably in Newark, Essex County, and died unknown. He appears on the 1850 census as a two year old child living with his parents in the city of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey (1850 United States Federal Census, North Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, page 6). Charles was still living at home in 1870. According to the census he was 22 years old, single and was law student (1870 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870).
2853. (ii.) GEORGE CROSS5, was born in February or March of 1850 in New Jersey, probably in Newark, Essex County, and died unknown. He appears on the 1850 census as a three month old infant living with his parents in the city of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey (1850 United States Federal Census, North Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, new Jersey, page 6). He was not a resident of his parents household in 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870).
2430. (iii.) ANNA or "ANNIE" J. CROSS5, was born circa 1859 in New Jersey, probably in Newark, Essex County, and died unkown. She was probably named after her grandmother Ann Read Davis who died in 1859. Annie lived with her parents in 1870 in the city of Newark. She and her sister Henrietta attended school (1870 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870). Annie was still at home in 1880, although the census gives her name as "Anna." The Cross family resided at 702 Springfield Ave. in Newark (1880 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, pages 465B-C, 2 June 1880).
2854. (iv.) HENRIETTA CROSS5, was born circa 1860 in New Jersey, probably in Newark, Essex County and died unkown. She lived with her parents in 1870 in the city of Newark, and attended school with her sister Annie (1870 United States Federal Census, th Ward, City of Newark, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870). Henrietta married by 1880, George J. Robinson. He was born circa 1852 in New Jersey. Henrietta and George lived with Henrietta's parents in 1880. The Cross family resided at 702 Springfield Ave. in Newark. George worked as a salesman in New York City (1880 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, pages 465B-C, 2 June 1880).
2431. (v.) MARY E. CROSS5, was born circa 1865 in New Jersey, probably in Newark, Essex County and died unknown. She lived with her parents in 1870 in the city of Newark. She was five years old and had not yet statrted to attend school (1870 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex Couunty, New Jersey, page 564A, 13 July 1870). In 1880, Mary lived with her parents, her two older sisters, Annie and Henrietta, and Henriett'a husband George. Mary attended school during the 1880 census year (1880 United States Federal Census, 6th Ward, City of Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, pages 465B-C, 2 June 1880).
