HULDA SMITH HARTUNG5
846. HULDA SMITH5 (Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 7 January 1857 in Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 25 January 1925 (Latter Day Saints, hereinafter LDS, Batch #C509871; Ramseyburg Cemetery). By the time Hulda was 3 years old, her parents had moved from a rented farm in Oxford Township to one in Hope Township, Warren County. Hulda appears on the 1860 census living with her parents on a rented farm in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). By 1870, Hulda's parents had purchased a farm in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County. Hulda lived with her family on the farm and attended school with her brother Lemic and sister Anna (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia).
Hulda married by 1879, George E. Hartung, the son of Jabez George Hartung and Sarah M. Johnson. George was born 24 December 1855 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 June 1940 in Warren County (Loughborough 2001; Ramseyburg Cemetery). In 1880, Hulda and George lived in Hope Towsnhip. George was a farmer and Hulda was keeping house. Their household was enumerated on 14 June 1880, about six weeks before their eldest son, William "Clinton" Hartung was born (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 199, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 421C, 14 June 1880). Hulda and George would have three more children over the next fifteen years: Jay in 1882, Jennie in 1885 and Charles in 1895. The 1900 census shows George, Hulda and their four children as residents of Knowlton Township. They lived on a farm adjacent to Hulda's brother Lemic Smith near the town of Delaware. George was a farmer. His two eldest sons, Clinton and Jay, worked as laborers on the farm. The Hartung's only daughter Jennie was still in school. Charles Hartung, the youngest child was five years old when the census was enumerated and had not yet started school. He was still at home with Hulda during the school year. According to the census, Hulda was the mother of four children, all of whom were living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900).
George and Hulda's three older chidren all married over the next decade. Clinton married Blanche Evelyn Young in December 1901 and settled in Harmony Township, Warren County (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Harmony Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 21 May 1910; Loughborough 2001). Jay married Minnie Dunfield in 1904 or 1905 and settled across the Delaware River in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 96, Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 18B, 9 May 1910; Loughborough 2001). Jennie married her fourth cousin (2835) Raymond R. Gibbs6 (Israel Gibbs5, Phebe Gibbs4, Elizabeth Luse3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), the son of Israel and Sarah (Moore) Gibbs. They lived in Knowlton Township (Loughborough 2001; Ramseyburg Cemetery). By 1910, Charles was the only Hartung child who still lived at home. He worked as a laborer on his father's farm along with an hired hand named J. Sigurson, a 39 year old native of Norway, who had lived in the United Stated since 1890. Sigurson was actually trained as a watchmaker, but was working as a farm hand in 1910. George Hartung was a general farmer. He owned his farm free and clear of all mortgages. Adjacent to the Hartungs on the census was the family of William and Mary (Brinkruff) Clifford5 (Mary Catherine Read4, Samuel Cooke Read3, Aaron Read 2, Joseph Read1). Mary Clifford was Hulda's third cousin (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 29 April 1910).
Charles Hartung married circa 1914, his fourth cousin Helen Mabel Swayze6 (Irvine C. Swayze5, Elizabeth Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1). She was the daughter of Irvine "Clinton" and Rebecca (Smith) Swayze. Charles moved out of the house and began his own family. Then, in March 1919, the Hartung's only daughter Jennie Gibbs died (Ramseyburg Cemetery). She left behind her husband Raymond Gibbs and her six year old son Charles Gibbs. On the 1920 census, Raymond Gibbs lived in Knowlton Township on the Delaware Road in dwelling 225, George and Hulda Hartung were in dwelling 229. Raymond's sister Lila was keeping house for him, but Hulda was close enough that she could see her grandson. George Hartung continued to farm in 1920, but he didn't have a hired hand living in his household. The Hartung farm was surrounded by the homes of Hulda's Osmun cousins. Her third cousins Clayton4 and Orton Osmun4 (who were brothers) lived in dwellings 230 and 233. Their Uncle Alvah Osmun3 (Huldah's second cousin once removed) lived in dwelling 231. The Osmuns were all descendants of Joseph Read1 through his son David Read2 and David's daughter Sarah Ann Read Osmun3. Alvah Osmun was Sarah Osmun's son. Clayton and Orton were Sarah's grandsons, the children of her son Charles Osmun (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 19 January 1920).
Hulda Smith Hartung died 25 January 1925, five years after the 1920 census. She was buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, in the village of Delaware in Knowlton Township. George Hartung moved in with his son Charles G. Hartung and Charles's wife Helen. He aapears on the 1930 census as a resident of their household. Charles and Helen owned a farm on the Hope to Delaware Road in Hope Township. They also owned a radio. The household also included their son Ralph, daughter Ruth and a new baby—3month old Marian. Their oldest son Ramon was living with Helen's parents, Clinton and Rebecca Swayze, in Knowlton Township, while he worked part time in a grocery store and he attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-11, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 14 April 1930; Enumeration District 21-13, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 4 April 1930). Sometime between 1930 and 1937, Charles and Helen divorced. Charles married Charlotte Quig as his second wife on 20 February 1937. Whether George continued to live with Charles and his new wife is unknown. George Hartung died in June 1940 and was buried with Hulda in Ramseyburg Cemetery. Their graves were visited 15 April 2005.
Hulda Smith and George E. Hartung had 4 children who were born between 1880 and 1895 and 16 grandchildren who were born between 1902 and circa 1940. They also had at least 47 great-grandchildren, 68 second great-grandchildren and 36 third great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 171.
