JERRY E. MARTIN5
862. JERRY E. "Jock" MARTIN5 (Benjamin F. Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 26 March 1865 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died 1948 (Pascal 1997; Klaus 2005). His birth and name are recorded in the Stillwater Township birth records. Jerry was the seventh son and youngest child of the twelve children of Benjamin and Mary (Pittenger) Martin. He lived with his parents in 1870 in Stillwater Township, but was not in school (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219). Jerry was still a resident of his parents household in 1880, but he was not in school. All of his older brother and sisters, with the exception of Orrin, had moved out of the house. Jerry's brother Orrin had returned home with his daughter Bula in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 184C, 19 and 20 June 1880). Benjamin Martin died in December 1880, six months after the census was enumerated. Jerry, who was a minor, was listed as an heir in the February 1881 petition presented to the court by his mother for Letters of Administration for his late father's estate (Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter SCSCR, Book A:224). His address in the petition was given as Swartswood, New Jersey.
Jerry married circa 1884, Martha Jean "Jeanie" Staley, the daughter of John C. and Mary Staley of Stillwater (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 183B, 18 June 1880; Klaus 2002). She was born February 1866 in New Jersey. By 1900, the couple lived on a farm, which they owned, in Stillwater Township. They had had nine children together, four of whom had died prior to the census. The surviving children were Richmond, Abram, Anna, Mamie and Tehesse. Jeannie was probably expecting Louisa, her tenth child, when the census was enumerated. The Martin household in 1900 included Jerry and Jeanie, their five surviving children, Jerry's mother Mary Pittenger Martin and Jeanie's 27 year old sister Anna Mary Staley (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 6 June 1900). During the nineteenth century and early twenieth century, single women often lived with family members and helped with the housework, cooking and sewing, worked in the kitchen garden and helped can food, make sauage, and a variety of other food products from the produce of the farm. While their work assured them a bed and meals, it could, in some cases, bring these women cash earnings. For example, Abbie E. Magee of Monmouth County, New Jersey recorded wages for chores she performed in 1905. This included $1.50 for cutting potatoes for planting, $5.00 for canning, $2.00 for house cleaning, and various sums for sewing and dressmaking (Burstyn 1997:169). Anna Staley probably had a similar arrangement with her sister's family as her occupation was given in the 1900 census as "servant." She would stay with the family for at least the next twenty years.
By 1910, Jeanie Staley Martin had given birth to thirteen children. Seven of the thirteen children lived with their parents on the family farm in Stillwater Township. They were: Abram, Anna, Mamie, Tehesse, Louise, Bradley and Frances. Five of the children had died before 1910, and the eldest surviving son, Richmond (or Richard), no longer lived at home. Jeanie's sister Anna Staley (age 37) still lived with the family and helped her sister maintain the large household. Her occupation in the census is given as "servant, private family." The Martin's eldest daughter Anna was 15 years old. She was not in school and probably stayed home to help her mother and aunt. Jock and Jeanie Martin owned their farm free and clear of all mortgages (1910 United States Federal census, Enumeration District 184, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 8A, 4 May 1910).
Jean Staley Martin died between 1910 and 1920. Jerry appears on the 1920 census as a widower. His sister-in-law, Anna Staley was acting as the family's house housekeeper. According to the 1920 census, Anna Staley was 47 years old and was single. Jerry Martin owned a dairy farm in Stillwater Township. He and his sons Richmond and Bradley operated the farm together. Richmond and his wife lived in a separate house on the farm. Bradley and Jerry's daughters, Louise and Frances, lived in the family home (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 141, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 5 January 1920). Louise married in either 1920 or 1921. As she began to have children, her aunt Anna Staley came to live with her (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-26, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 11 April 1930).
Jerry remarried by 1930. His second wife was Maude L. (Last Name Unknown). She was born 22 December 1879 in Pennsylvania and died November 1970 probably in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). This marriage appears to also have been a second marriage for Maude. According to the census she was 18 at the time of her first marriage, which places her first wedding in about 1898. In 1930, Jerry and Maude Martin owned real estate valued at $5,000. They lived on Fredon Road in Fredon Township in Sussex County. No occupation is listed for Jerry in the census, hence it is possible that he was retired (1930 United States Census Fredon Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 19-10, sheet 4B, 12 April 1930). Jerry died in 1948 (Klaus 2005). Maude died in 1970, her final residence was in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). Jerry and Martha Jean are buried in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.
Jerry E. Martin and Martha Jean Staley had 13 children born betweeen 1885 and 1910, and at least 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Total identified descendants equals 24.
