ANNA MARY DENNIS COOK5
870. ANNA MARY DENNIS5 (Sarah Elizabeth Read4, David Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born between the first and fourth of July 1860 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 1930. Her birth is listed in the township records as occurring between the first and the fourth of the month (LDS Batch #C509541; Pascal 1998). Although the 1860 census taker visited her parents home approximately one month after she was born, Anna does appear in the 1860 census. Her birth date occurred after the 30 June 1860 cut off date for the census year and she was not included in the family enumeration. In 1860, David Wilson and Sarah Elizabeth (Read) Dennis lived on a farm in Stillwater Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 290, 2 August 1860). Anna does appear on the 1870 census as a 9 year old school girl. She resided with her parents and her five siblings (David, Frank, William, Violetta and Flora) on the family's farm in Stillwater Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, pages 204-205, 5 July 1870, Post Office Stillwater).
Anna's father died in 1872, when she was 12 years old. Eight years later, Anna was out on her only. The census for 1880 gives her age as 19. She and her 16 year old brother William Dennis were both employed by Marshall and Carrie Cook of Blairstown Township in Warren County. Anna did housework for the Cooks and William worked as a farm hand. Another young man, named Hiram Titman (age 19) also worked for the family as a farm hand. The Cooks had three children: Gussie (age 7), Wilson (age 5) and Leander (age 2) (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 286C, 5 June 1880). Marshall appears in the 1887 Warren County History and Directory as a farmer living in Blairstown Township.
Carrie Cook died between 1880 and 1890. Marshall needed a wife to look after his three children. Anna may still have been working for the family at the time of Carrie's death. In about 1891, Anna and Marshall Cook were married. Marshall was the son of Elisha Cook (Crockett 2005; Crosswell 2004; Keefus 2001; Stoneman 2004). He was born in October 1843 (and was 17 years older than Anna). In 1900, Marshall and Anna lived on a farm in Frelinghuysen Township in Warren County. The family owned their farm, but it was mortgaged. One of Marshall's sons by Carrie lived with the couple—22 year old Leander. Marshall and Anna also had one child of their own, a seven year old daughter named Myrtle. Leander worked on the farm with his father; Myrtle was at home. Marshall's daughter Gussie (by Carrie) had married the year before the census and was living with her husband, Ina Howard on a farm in Frelinghuysen. Gussie did not have children in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheets 6A, 7A-7B, 16-18 and 21 June 1900). Marshall and Anna had a second child, a son named Watson W. Cook, on 9 August 1901. Marshall died sometime after the 1900 census, as Anna appears on the 1910 census as a widow. Both of her children —17 year old Myrtle and 8 year old Watson (named as W. Wellington on the census)—were at home, both were in school. Anna's occupation is given in the census as farmer. She owned the farm, but it was still mortgaged. The family lived on the south Town to Shiloh Road in Frelinghuysen Township (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 125, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9A, 2 May 1910).
The 1920 census gives the family's address as Shiloh Road in Frelinghuysen Township. Anna still shared her home with both of her children in 1920. Neither of them were in school. Anna was employed as a farmer and Watson was employed as a farm laborer on the home farm (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6A, 16-17 January 1920). Watson Cook married in about 1926 or 1927. Watson, wife Nellie, and their young two daughters lived in the same dwelling with Anna and Myrtle in 1910. The census numbered them as two separate households. Anna and Myrtle Cook were family number 65 and Watson's household was family number 66. Anna's step-grandson Ernest Howard was listed as a member of her household. Ernest was the 16 year old son of Anna's step-daughter Gussie Cook Howard. Neither Anna nor her daughter Myrtle were employed. Watson Cook and his nephew Ernest Howard were employed on the home dairy farm, Watson as the farmer and Ernest as a farm laborer (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-6, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 18 April 1930).
Anna Mary Dennis and Marshall Cook had 2 children, who were born between 1893 and 1901. They had at least two granddaughters who were born in 1926 and 1929. Total descendants equals 4.
