873. WILLIAM ELMER DENNIS5 (Sarah Elizabeth Read4, David Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born Christmas Day 1863 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 1930. His birth is listed in the township records. However, no first name is entered in the records for him, he is listed as a male child of David W. and Sarah E. Dennis. First Name is from the Latter Day Saints (LDS AFN:1HKB-9K8). William appears on the 1870 census as a 6 year old school boy. He resided with his parents and five siblings (David, Frank, Anna, Violetta and Flora) on the family's farm in Stillwater Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, pages 204-205, 5 July 1870, Post Office Stillwater).

William's father died in 1872, when she was 9 years old. Eight years later, William was out on his only. The census for 1880 gives his age as 16. He and his 19 year old sister Anna Dennis were both employed by Marshall and Carrie Cook of Blairstown Township in Warren County. Anna did housework for the Cooks and William worked as a farm hand. Another young man, named Hiram Titman (age 19) also worked for the family as a farm hand (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 286C, 5 June 1880). William eventually settled in the Town of Minisink in Orange County, New York. His older brother Frank lived near-by in Minisink in the village of Unionville. Frank was a physican and had lived in the area since at least 1887, when he married Mary Wisner of Unionville. William married circa 1882, Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Last Name Unknown). She was born August 1863 in New York. William and Lizzie rented a farm in the Town of Minisink in 1900. The couple lived with their two children—12 year old Mabel and 9 month old Floyd. They also had a servant named George Hunt. He was 17 years old and work as a laborer on the farm (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26, Minisink, Orange County, New York, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). George Hunt would marry the Dennis's daughter Mabel in 1902 or 1903 when she was 15 years old. Their first child, a son named William was born in about 1903 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34, 4th Ward, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 5A, 20 April 1910).

By 1910, William and Lizzie had left their farm and had purchased a boarding house in the village of Johnson in the Town of Minisink. Lizzie ran the boarding house and William was employed as a teamster. At the time of the census, Lizzie had four boarders: Thomas Noland (age 44) who was a runner for the creamery; Erve Clark (age 30) and Frederick Whenwick (age 32) who worked as teamsters for the creamery and Clark Regan (age 35) who was a laborer at the creamery (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26, Johnson Village, Minisink, Orange County, New York, sheet 6A, 22 April 1910). In 1920, William and Elizabeth still lived in their home in Town of Minisink. They owned it free and clear of mortgages. William was employed as a laborer doing general work. According to the census, William did the work on his own account and was not an hourhly wage earner. The couple's son Floyd lived at home. He was 20 and was employed as a laborer in the local creamery. The family had two boarders, Thomas Nolan was still with the family and he was still employed as a wage earner at the creamery. The other boarder was 33 year old Charles Brumadge who also worked as wage laborer at the creamery (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 127, Town of Minisink, Orange County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 28 January 1920).

Lizzie Dennis died between 1920 and 1930. By 1930, William, who was 68 years old, lived with his daughter Mabel Hunt, her husband George (who had once been Wililam's farm hand) and their two sons, William and Loyd Hunt. The Hunts lived at 44 Lafayette AVenue in Middletown, Orange County. William Dennis was retired in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 36-41, Ward 4, Blocks 218/203, Middletown City, Orange County, New York, sheet 9B, 9 April 1930).

William and Elizabeth Dennis had 2 children, who were born between 1887 and 1899. Total descendants equals 2.

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM and ELIZABETH DENNIS:

. (i.) MABEL M. DENNIS6, was born September 1887 in New York and died unknown. In 1900, Mabel lived with her parents on a farm in the Town of Minisink in Orange County, New York. She also attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 35, Minisink, Orange County, New York, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). Mabel married in either 1902 or 1903 when she was 15 years old. Her husband was George H. Hunt, who had been her father's farm hand in 1900. George was born June 1882 in New York. The couple's first son William D. Hunt was born in 1901. In 1910, Mabel and George lived with their son William in a rented house on Grant Street in Middletown, Orange County. The Grant Street address also included the household of Laura Miller, a 77 year old widow who lived with her two 40-something daughters in the other portion of the house. According to the census Mabel was the mother of two children, only one of whom was living in 1910. George was employed as a driver for a wholesale paper house (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 5A, 20 April 1910). By 1920, Mabel and George had purchased a home at 44 Lafayette Avenue in Middletown, New York. George was employed by the Creamery. The couple had three living children in 1920: William (age 19) who worked as a truck driver, Rhea (age 7) who was in school, and Loyd (age 2) (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 126, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 11A, 22 January 1920). The family was still at 44 Lafayette Avenue in 1930. Mabel's widowed father, William E. Dennis, had moved in with the couple. Their daughter Rhea had maried Grant Vandermark. She and her family lived down the street in 33 Lafayette Avenue. Their sons William and Loyd were still at home. George Hunt was employed baker in a Bake shop. The couple's son William worked as a distributor for Drake's cakes (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 36-41, Ward 4, Blocks 218/203, Middletown City, Orange County, New York, sheet 9B, 9 April 1930). Children of Mabel M. Dennis and George H. Hunt:

. (i.) WILLIAM D. HUNT7, was born 16 January 1901 in Orange County, New York and died June 1985, possibly in Middletown, Orange County, New York (Social Security Death Index). In 1910, William, who was 9 years old, lived with his parents in a rented house on Grant Street in Middletown, Orange County. He attended school during the census year (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 5A, 20 April 1910). By 1920, William's parents had purchased a house at 44 Lafayette Avenue in Middletown. William lived with them at that address in both 1920 and 1930. In 1920, he was 19 years old and was employed as a truck driver. . (ii.) CHILD HUNT7, was born between 1901 and 1910 and died before 1910. The 1910 census states that Mabel and George Hunt were the parents of two children, one of whom had died before 1910 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 5A, 20 April 1910).

. (iii.) RHEA M. HUNT7, was born 19 May 1912, probably in Orange County, New York and died died 9 December 1998, possibly in Ocean County, New Jersey (Ham 1962:297; Social Security Death Index). In 1920, she lived with her parents and brothers William and Lloyd at 44 Lafayette Avenue in Middletown, Orange County. Rhea was 7 and was only Hunt child in school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 126, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 11A, 22 January 1920). She married at the age of 15 on 23 May 1927, Grant Irving Vandermark, the son of David VanSteeburg Vandermark and Julia Catherine Mapes. He was born 19 April 1906 and died June 1981 in New Jersey, probably in Monmouth County (Ham 1962:297; Social Security Death Index). In 1930, they had a 20 month old daughter named Florence J. Vandermark. The Vandermarks lived in a rented house at 33 Lafayette Avenue, just down the street from Rhea's parents, who still lived at number 44 Lafayette. Rehea's grandfather William Dennsi also lived at number 44. Grant Vandermark was a forman with an oil company in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 36-41, Blocks 203/219, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 10-A, 10 April 1930). Rhea served as registrar for the Mapes Family Association of New York for several years, this was the famil of her mother-in-law Julia Mapes Vandermark (Ham 1962:297). The Vandermark family moved to New Jersey before 1951 (Social Security Death Index). In 1962, Grant and Rhea resided at 3 Burtina Place in Keysport, Monmouth County, New Jersey (Ham 1962:297). They were still in Keysport in 1981 when Grant died. Rhea Vandermark resided in Tom's River, Ocean County, New Jersey at the time of her death in 1998 (Social Security Death Index). Children of Rhea M. Hunt and Grant Vandermark:

. (i.) FLORENCE JULIA VANDERMARK8, was born 2 October 1928, probably in Orange County, New York and died October 1993, probably in Monmouth County, New Jersey (Social Security Death Index; Ham 1962:297). In 1930, she reside with her parents at 33 Lafayette Avenue in Middletown, Orange County. Her maternal grandparents, Mabel and George Hunt lived at number 44 Lafayette Avenue, as did her great-grandfather William Dennis (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 36-41, Blocks 203/219, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheets 9B to 10-A, 10 April 1930; Ham 1962:297). Florence married on 21 June 1950, Carmen William Guzzo. He was born 11 August 1926 and died 2 March 1993 in New Jersey (Ham 1962:297; Social Security Death Index). In 1962, Florence and Carmen resided at 5 Edgeview Road in Keysport, Monmouth County, New Jersey (Ham 1962:297). Florence and Carmen resided in Howell, Monmouth County, New Jersey at the time of their deaths in 1993. Children of Florence Vandermark and Carmen Guzzo:

. (i.) CAROLYN SHIRLEY GUZZO9, was born 2 June 1950 (Ham 1962:3577).

. (ii.) DIANE ROSE GUZZO9, was born 13 March 1957 (Ham 1962:357).

. (ii.) SHIRLEY MABEL VANDERMARK8, was born 29 August 1930. Shirley married on 30 April 1955 William E. Fitzgerald. He was born 4 June 1923 (Ham 1962:358) and died November 1990 in New Jersey (Social Security Death Index). Children of Shirley Vandermark and William Fitzgerald:

. (i.) RICHARD PATRICK FITZGERALD9, was born 16 March 1958 (Ham 1962:358).

. (ii.) CHRISTOPHER WILLIAM FITZGERALD9, was born 15 March 1960 (Ham 1962:358).

. (iii.) CHILD FITZGERALD9, was born May 1962 (Ham 1962:358).

. (ii.) HELEN RACHEL VANDERMARK8, was born 27 July 1933 (Ham 1962:297). Helen married on 24 September 1950 Alfred Torsiello, Sr. Alfred does not have an middled name. Alfred may be the son of Sabote and Giovanni Torsiello. In 1930, the Torisello family resided in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey. Alfred was seven months old and was the youngest of 11 children. His parents were both born in Italy, but he and siblings were all born in New Jersey. His father worked in the construction business (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 7-339, Ward 2, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 22 April 1930; Ham 1962:297) In 1962, Helen and Alfred resided at 65 Carmer Avenue in Belleville, Essex County, New Jersey (Ham 1962:358). Children of Helen Vandermark and Alfred Torsiello, Sr.:

. (i.) ALFRED TORSIELLO, Jr.9, was born 29 May 1952 (Ham 1962:358).

. (ii.) JOYCE ANN TORSIELLO9, was born 6 March 1954 (Ham 1962:358).

. (iii.) ROBERT TORSIELLO9, was born 19 April 1956 (Ham 1962:358).

. (iv.) LLOYD P. HUNT7, was born in the fall of 1917, probably in Orange County, New York and died August 1976, possibly in Walton, Delaware County, New York (Social Security Death Index). He first appears on the United States Census in 1920 as a toddler age 2 years, 3 months. He lived with his parents and his older brother and sister at 44 Lafayette Avenue in Middletown, New York (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 126, Ward 4, Middletown, Orange County, New York, sheet 11A, 22 January 1920). In 1930, Loyd was 12 year old and in school. His family still lived at 44 Lafayette Avenue(1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 36-41, Ward 4, Blocks 218/203, Middletown City, Orange County, New York, sheet 9B, 9 April 1930). A possible match for Lloyd in the Social Security Death Index is Lloyd Hunt born 13 September 1917, social security number issued in New York befoe 1951, died December 1986, resident of Saint Louis, Saint Louis County, Missouri at the time of his death.

. (ii.) FLOYD DENNIS6, was born August 1899 in New York and died unknown. He first appears on the 1900 census as a nine month old infant living with his parents on a farm in the Town of Minisink in Orange County, New York (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 35, Minisink, Orange County, New York, sheet 3A, 5 June 1900). In 1910, Floyd was 10 years old and was in school. He still lived with his parents, but they no longer lived on a farm. His mother ran a boarding house in the village of Johnson, his father was employed as a teamster (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26, Johnson Village, Minisink, Orange County, New York, sheet 6A, 22 April 1910). By 1920, Floyd was employed as a laborer in the local creamery. He still lived at home with his parents in their boarding house (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 127, Town of Minisink, Orange County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 28 January 1920).
