FLORA LOUISA DENNIS VANSICKLE5

875. FLORA LOUISA DENNIS5 (Sarah Elizabeth Read4, David Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 22 January 1868, in Sussex County, New Jersey and died September 1970 (Social Security Death Records; Stillwater Cemetery). The 1870 census gives her name as "Laura L.," (1870 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, pages 204-205) but the LDS records and one of her descendants give her name as "Flora L. Dennis" (Van Sickle, personal communication, 2002). Flora's father died when she was five years old. She was the youngest surviving child of her parents's eight chlidren. At the time of her father's death the six surviving Dennis children were: David, age about 18; Frank, age 16; Annie, age 13; William, who was almost 10 years old; Violetta, who was almost 8 years old, and Flora, who was 5. Eight years later, when the 1880 census was enumerated, Flora was the only Dennis child still living at home. She and her mother, Sarah Read Dennis, lived in the village of Stillwater. Flora was twelve and was in school. Sarah was "keeping house." The dwelling that Sarah and Flora lived in contained two households, that of Sarah and Flora Dennis and that of the family of James Miller, who was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The dwelling that the Miller and Dennis families lived in was dwelling 279. The Millers were family 284 and Sarah and Flora Dennis were family 285. Sarah's sister Lydia Snover and her husband Thamer lived with their two sons in dwelling 280 and were family 286. Thamer Snover was the local school master (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 186B, 29 June 1880).

Sometime after 1880, both Flora and her older sister Violetta moved to Brooklyn, New York. Flora married Dr. Albert Myers (or Meyers) Van Sickle, on 28 April 1897 in Brooklyn, New York (LDS AFN:1HKB-BJ3; LDS Compact Disc #7, Pin #778888). He was the son of Jacob and Hannah Van Sickle and was born October 1872. Albert was a physician in Brooklyn, New York (Stillwater Cemetery; Van Sickle 2002). In 1900, he and Flora lived in a rented house at 325 Mary Avenue in Brooklyn. They had a boarder, 31 year old Clarence Parr, who was born in Indiana in February 1869. He worked as a clerk for the gas company. Albert and Flora did not have children in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 298, 19th, Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York, Kings County, New York, sheet 9, 1 June 1900). Their first child, daughter Edith, was born 9 May 1903. She was followed by her borther Albert, who was born 10 November 1908. By 1910, Flora, Albert, Edith and young Albert Van Sickle lived at 545 54th Street in Brooklyn. The house belonged to the Van Sickles, although it was mortgaged. Flora's sister Violetta, her husband Thomas W. Thompson and Thomas's father John W. Thompson lived with the Van Sickle's. The Thompsons paid rent to the Van Sickles. Thomas Thompson was employed as a saleman in the dry goods industry. His father, who was 75, was retired. Albert Van Sickle was a physican in general practice (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 155, Ward 8, Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York, Kings County, New York, sheets 12A-B, 22 April 1910).

The Van Sickles and the Thompsons still resided at 545 54th street in 1920. Albert Van Sickle was still a physican. Thomas Thompson's name is given as "William" (as Albert's name was given) in the census. He was employed as a saleman in a department store. John Thompson had probably died by 1920, as he was not a resident of the household. Both Edith and "Wilson" Vansickle were in school. Flora and her sister Violetta kept house for the family (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 3939, Election District 8, Assembly District 7, Borough of Brooklyn, Greater New York, Kings County, New York, sheet 15A, 16 January 1920). Albert Van Sickle died in 1921. Flora buried him in the Dennis family plot in Stillwater Cemetery in the village of Stillwater.

Flora remained in Brooklyn after Albert's death. In 1930, Flora and her daughter Edith still lived at 548 54th in Brooklyn. They owned the home, which was valued at $12,000. Flora's sister Violetta Thompson and her husband no longer lived in the household. They had returned to the Sussex/Warren County area and lived in the village of Hope in Warren County. Edith Van Sickle was employed as a high school librarian. The two women had taken in a boarder, 36 year old Edith Van Salisburg. She was employed as a clerk in a hospital (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 24-1034, Assembly District 7, Block 7, Borough of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, sheet 19A, 30 April 1930). Flora stayed in Brooklyn into the 1960s. Her social security number was issued in New York in 1963. However, by 1970 she was residing in Summit, Union County, New Jersey. Her daughter Edith was a resident of Summit. Flora died at the age of 102 in September 1970. She was buried with Albert in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey (Social Security Death Index; Stillwater Cemetery). Their graves were field checked on 14 April 2005.

Flora Dennis and Albert Vansickle had 2 children, who were born between 1903 and 1908. They had at least 3 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Total descendants equals 13.
