DAVID "ORREN" VANSCOTEN5

878. DAVID "ORREN" VANSCOTEN,5 (Margaret Kinney4, Catherine Read3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 26 May 1860 (Latter Day Saints file, hereinafter LDS, IGI), in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died after 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 15 April 1930). He appears as an infant on the 1860 census (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 571, 26 July 1860). In 1870, he lived with his parents in Hope Township and attended school. The census gives his name as "David O. Vanscoten" (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 353, 4 August 1870). The 1880 census gives his name as Orren D. Vanscoten. He lived with his parents in 1880 and was employed as a laborer. According to the cenus he was out of work for 5 months between 1 June 1879 and 31 May 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880). The 1887 Warren County History and Directory (Weaver and Kern 1887) lists Orren D. Vanscoten as a laborer living in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township. Orren was married twice. His first wife was Anna M. Ervine, the daughter of William and Eleanor Ervine. Orren and Annie were married on 30 October 1886 (LDS IGI). Anna was born 27 January 1860 and died 21 February 1895. She is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). The Ervine and Vanscoten homes were close to one another in Walnut Valley. In 1880, when the census was enumerated, The Vanscotens lived in dwelling 149 and the Ervines lived in dwelling 153. William Ervine was a farmer. Annie was 20 years old and lived at home with her parents. Her two younger brothers, William M. (age 16) and John B. (age 10) also lived at home. Both boys worked as farm hands, and both were in school (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880).

After Annie's death in 1895, Orren married Susan A. Savacool as his second wife (LDS IGI). The wedding took place 10 March 1898. Susan was born February 1856 in New Jersey. This was also a second marriage for her. Her first husband was William Marshall Quick, the son of Benjamin Hunt Quick and Elizabeth Jane France. His great-grandmother was Elizabeth Vaughn France. She was a daughter of the Rev. Daniel Vaughn by his first wife Dinah Watkins. She became the stepdaughter of Hannah Read2 on Hannah's marriage to Daniel Vaughn. Hannah Read was the oldest sister of David's great-grandfather, Aaron Read. William Quick was born 8 April 1858 and died 27 July 1884. He and Susan had four children during their marriage.

In 1900, Orren and Susan lived on a rented farm in Blairstown Township. One of Orren's sons by his marraige to Annie lived with them, this was his son Gilbert. Gilbert was nine years old and but he was not attending school. According to the census, Susan Van Scoten could not read or write. Orren and Susan lived in dwelling 209, Orren's Uncle Bartley and Aunt Sarah Kinney lived in dwelling 212 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 21 June 1900, sheet 10B). The 1910 census shows Orren and Susan as residents of Blairstown Township. They lived on a rented farm on the "Middle Road to Knowlton." Orren and his son Gilbert (by Annie) were both farmers on the home farm. Orren's daughter Marsha (by Annie) also lived with the couple. According to the census, Susan was the mother of four children, all of whom were living in 1910. None of them lived in the Vanscoten household. The Vanscotens lived in dwelling 123, Orren's third cousin Celia Titman Jones5 (Malinda Read Titman4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) lived in dwelling 115 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 6A, 22 April 1910). Celia Titman Jones was also the sister of Orren's brother-in-law, Read Titman (the husband of Orren's sister Sarah Catherine).

In 1930, Orren and Susan lived in Blairtown Township. The couple did not reside in the town of Blairstown. Their home was located in the country side outside the town, but their property was not a farm. The couple owned their home which was valued at $2,500. They also owned a radio. While they did not live on a farm, Orren was employed as a farmer. However, the census states that he was a wage earning farmer, which means that he hired out as a farmer for someone else. His brother-in-law Read Titman lived near-by on a farm. The Titman farm was run by David's nephew John V. Titman (the son of Orren's late sister Sarah Catherine and her husband Read Titman). According to the census, John V. Titman was an employer as well as a farmer. The Titmans lived in dwelling 271, Orren and Susan lived in dwelling 268. Jabez and Marilla Ervine lived in dwelling 269. Marilla Ervine was Read Titman's sister and Orren's third cousin. Jabez Ervine was kin to Orren's first wife Anna. Jabez Ervine was also a farmer. He owned and operated a poultry farm. It is possible that Orren worked for either John Titman or Jabez Ervine (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 15 April 1930).
