ISAAC "KINNEY" VANSCOTEN5
880. ISAAC "KINNEY" VANSCOTEN,5 (Margaret Kinney4, Catherine Read3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 2 March 1864, in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch# C509751) and died after 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 21-13, sheet 4-B, 10 and 11 April 1930). In 1870, he lived with his parents in Hope Township. He did not attend school that year. He had just turned 6 in March and was probably too young to attend school. The 1870 census lists his name as "Isaac K." (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 353, 4 August 1870). In 1880, Kinney lived with his parents in Walnut Valley, Blaristown Township. The census gives his name as "Isaac K." Kinney worked as a laborer, but was unemployed for 4 months between 1 June 1879 and 31 May 1880. He attended school during the 1880 census year (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880).
Kinney Vanscoten married, on 13 March 1897, Mary Ellen Dawson. She was the daughter of James G. Dawson and Mary Craunk (McCabe 2003). In 1910, Kinney lived as a boarder in the home of Joseph Koner in Knowlton Township. Neither Mary Ellen or his two daughters were residents of the household. Joseph Koner was an African American. He was born in Virginia and was 43 years old. Koner worked as laborer in construction. His wife (whose name was illegible in the census) was also a native of Virginia. She ran the boarding house which included her husband's brother Edward Slater (age 42) and five white male boarders. All of the men in the householf were employed in construction. Kinney Van Scoten was a carpenter; Harry Coleman (age 35) was an engineer; Paul Shields (age 38) was a molder; Thomas McDermott (age 33) was a machinist; and Barner Roher (age 40) was a fireman. Coleman, Shields, McDermott and Roher were all natives of Pennsylvania. The Koners and Edward Slater were all from Virginia (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, 10 May 1910). By 1930, Kinney was living with his daughter Gladys Vanscoten Lutz and her husband and children. The census indicates that he was married, but Mary Ellen was not a member of the Lutz household. Kinney was still working as a farm laborer. The 1930 census gives his name as "Kinney Vanscoten" (1930 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 21-13, sheet 4-B, 10 and 11 April 1930).
Kinney Vanscoten and Mary Ellen Dawson had at least 2 children born between 1900 and 1902. I have identified 7 grandchildren born between 1914 and 1925 and 1 great-grandchild. Total identified descendants equals 10 individuals.
