READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SAMUEL COOKE READ3

91. SAMUEL COOKE READ3 (Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 17 June 1816 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 29 July 1869 in New Jersey. He married MARY ANN WOLVERTON, on 9 March 1843. She was the daughter of William Wolverton and Eliza Farley. Mary Ann was born 9 April 1824 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Northampton County and died 31 October 1874 in New Jersey. AS a young man, Samuel moved to Pennsylvania where he met Mary Ann. They began their married life in Pennsylvania. Their three children were born there between 1844 and 1854. After the death of his mother, in 1855, Samuel returned to Warren County, New Jersey with his family. He is listed on the 1860 United States Federal Census as a farmer living in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He possessed $3,000 worth of real estate and had a personal estate valued at $400. Samuel, Mary Ann, and their children were living with Samuel's 74 year old father, Aaron Read. After Aaron's death, Samuel bought his father's farm from the estate. This farm had been the original homestead of Joseph Read and Sarah Sutton. The farm in Pennsylvania was eventually sold. Samuel and Mary Ann's eldest daughter, Margaret Eliza Read, married her second cousin Jonah H. Read in January 1862. Two years later, Margaret Eliza and Jonah had their first child a son named Richard Alvin Read. Margaret Eliza died less than a month after the birth of her son. Samuel and Mary Ann took little Alvin in and raised him with their two remaining daughters, Mary Catherine and Ruth. Samuel died on 29 July 1869 and was buried in Union Brick Cemetery. Because he died after 1 July 1869, he is listed in the 1870 census—which coveres the year 1 July 1869 through 30 June 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 15). Samuel was listed as a farmer, with real estate valued at $8,000 and a personal estate of $6,000. After Samuel's death, Mary Ann continued to live on the family farm in Blairstown. Her grandson Alvin still lived with her and remained a resident of the household until her death on 31 October 1874. After Mary Ann's death, Alvin joinned his father Jonah and his step-mother Christeana. The family settled in Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio. Alvin was an heir to part of his grandfather's estate, as were his aunts Mary Catherine Brinkruff and Ruth Wildrick. Because Alvin's family lived in Ohio, his father asked his brother Samuel H. Read to care for Alvin's share of the inheritance. Mary Catherine and Ruth owned the family farm into the 1880s. They sold it to the Hildebrandt family.

Samuel and Mary Ann (Woolverton) Read had 3 children, born between 1844 and 1853. I have traced 8 grandchildren born between 1864 and 1888, 25 great-grandchildren born between 1889 and 1913, and 32 second great-grandchildren. Total number of descendants equals 68. However, Samuel Cooke Read shares 23 of his descendants in common with his Uncle Isaac Read, Sr.; 5 with his Uncle David Read and 4 with his Uncle Samuel Read (total equals 32). His daughter Margaret Eliza Read married Isaac's grandson Jonah H. Read (14 descendants); his grandson John Read Wildrick married Isaac's great-great-granddaughter Carrie Dell Raub (4 descendants); and his great-grandson Edward Cline Allen marrried Isaac's great-great-great granddaughter Helen Marie Gibbs (5 descendants). Samuel's great-granddaughter Ada Allen married David's great-grandson Harold Osmun (5 descendants). And finally, his granddaughter Mary Wildrick married Samuel's great-grandson Nelson Ayers (4 descendants).
