READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

MARY READ McMURTRIE3

92. MARY READ3 (Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 2 June 1818 (Kern 1938; Newberry c. 1934:80) probably in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died after 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Rockland County, New York, page 1A). Mary appears to have lived at home with her parents until her marriage. She appears as a resident of their household on both the 1830 and 1840 census (1830 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 381; 1840 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 371). She married Andrew McMurtrie on 10 February 1841 (Warren County Marriages). He was born circa 1818 in New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Rockland County, New York, page 1A). They initially resided in Andover, Sussex County, New Jersey. Mary's mother Peggy Read was very ill for the latter part of her life. She suffered from edema, which was known as "dropsy." Mary's sister Catherine lived with her parents after her marriage to Isaac Kinney, in order to care for their mother (Kern 1938; Newberry c.1934). The Kinney's were living with Aaron and Peggy in 1850 (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 455). Sometime between 1850 and 1855, Catherine Kinney and her large family moved out of the house Mary moved in to provide care. She remained there until Peggy's death on 14 May 1855. After Peggy's death, Mary's brother Samuel and his family moved in with their father. He lived there until Aaron died on 19 January 1861 (Newberry c.1934). The 1870 census places Andrew and Mary in Byram Township, Sussex County (post office Stanhope). Andrew was a farmer. They owned a farm valued at $3,000 and had a personal estate valued at $500. Three of the couples' children still lived at home: Aaron, Mary and Martha (1870 United States Federal Census, Byram Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 28B, 13 August 1870). By 1880, the family had relocated to Rockland County, New York. Andrew was a farmer. Only their daughter Martha was still living at home (1880 United States Federal Census, Rockland County, New York, page 1A).
