READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
RICHARD H. READ4
96. RICHARD H. READ4 (Richard Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born circa 1815 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 10 October 1903. He married Anna Perry, the daughter of John Perry and Eleanor Miller. She was born circa 1824 in Sussex, County, New Jersey and died after 1870. Ann's parents settled in Michigan in 1824 when Ann was an infant. In about 1840, Richard and his brother Levi settled together on a farmsted in Orion Township, Oakland County. They built a log house and broke about 10 acres of land. Richard met his wife, Ann Perry in Orion Township. Richard's brother, Levi, had married Ann's sister, Elizabeth Perry in 1841. Richard and Ann Read do not appear on the 1850 United States Federal Census for Oakland or Lapeer Counties. In 1860, the Reads were living in Lapeer Township, Lapeer County, Michigan, the post office was Lapeer. Richard's brother, Levi, and his family were living with Richard. The 1860 United States Federal Census (page 813) lists Richard as a farmer with real estate valued at $2,500 and a personal estate valued at $700. In the 1870 United States Federal Census (page 180), Richard and his family were still living on their farm in Lapeer Township, Lapeer County, Michigan. Richard's real estate in 1870 was valued at $10,000, his personal estate at $1,650. Richard was still living in Lapeer County in April 1871, when the final disbursement of his late father's estate was made (Warren County Receipts and Discharges, Book 4, folio 376). In 1880, Richard and Anna lived alone in Lapeer Township. Richard appears to have been retired as no occupation is listed in the 1880 census for him (1880 United States Federal Census, Lapeer Township, Lapeer County, Michigan, page 277B). Much of data for this essay is from the 1860 and 1870 United Federal Census for Michigan. Some data is from the 1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesse, Lapeer & Tuscola Counties, published by the Chapman Brothers. There is a short biography of Richard's brother, Levi Read, in the book (page 559). Some of the biographical data concerning the Perry sisters is from a personal communication from Michael Perry (2001), who is the great-great-grandson of John Perry, the brother of Elizabeth and Ann Perry.
