SAMUEL H. READ4
97. SAMUEL H. READ4 (Richard3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 22 November 1816 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 1879. He married on 17 March 1855, Hannah Barclay Schmuck, or Schmick, the daughter of John Schmuck and Martha Willett. Hannah was born 1817 in New Jersey and died 1896. Samuel was the administrator of his father's estate, which was settled in 1871. Hannah appears as the head of household on the 1880 United States Federal Census. She is listed as a widow living in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Other residents of the household were her son George Read and son-in-law and daughter, Levi and Martha Kettle. Samuel and Hannah are buried in Tranquility Methodist Church Yard, Tranquility, Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (1880 United States Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey; Kern 1938; Pascal 1998; Phethean 2001; Warren County Surrogate Court Records, Receipts and Discharges Liber 4, folio 248, 376).

787. (i.) GEORGE J.READ5, was born 6 April 1856 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509821; Phethean 2001) and died unknown. In 1880, he lived with his mother in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghusyen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 18; Phethean 2001).
788. (ii.) MARTHA ELIZABETH READ5, was born 12 January 1859 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509821; Phethean 2001) and died 1934. Phethean gives her name as Elizabeth. The name on her gravestone is Martha E. Kittle, it is probable that her full name was Martha Elizabeth Read. She married circa 1880, Levi Kittle, son of John and Almeda Kittle. Levi was born 1838 in New Jersey and died 1906. The 1880 census spells his last name as "Kettle." Levi and Martha are buried in Tranquility Methodist Church Yard, Tranquility, Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghusyen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 18; Pascal 1998; Phethean 2001). In 1930, Martha was a widow. She lived in the village of Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County in a rented house. Her rent was $6.50. Martha was not employed (1930 United States Federal Census Enumeration District 21-11, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey Sheet 5B, 24 April 1930).
