The last battle ship built during World II was the U.S.S. Wisconsin. She is an Iowa class battle ship, three football fields in length and 18 stories tall. She is also the largest Iowa class battle ship ever built, outmeasuring her sister ships (which include the U.S.S. Missouri) by 11 inches. She has two sets of guns, the largest measure 16 inches in diameter and the smaller guns are 5 inches in diameter. Today she is docked in Norfolk, Virginia. The deck and exterior area may be toured as part of the Nauticus exhibits (Nauticus is a Naval Museum). Interior tours are not available, as the humidity and temperature of the interior are kept constant so that the ship does not rust. This is done so that at any given time, should there be a national emergency, the Wisconsin can be called back into service (photograph Esther Doyle Read, 10 April 2004).
