DENNISON CEMETERY

Dennison Cemetery is located at the intersection of Dennison Street and Townsend in Swoyersville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This is not a complete transcription of inscriptions. Instead it represents selected stones transcribed on 3 November 2001 by Esther Doyle Read. All photographs were taken by Esther Doyle Read on 14 May 2005. There are 20 stones included in this transcription, representing 29 individuals. The cemetery is still active.

Deeble, John W., Pennsylvania, Pvt Co C 163 Infantry, World War I, Feb. 22 1880 - Feb. 27, 1965. Small stone on the Honeywell Deeble Plot. This plot is marked with a large stone labled "Honeywell Deeble," surrounded by four smaller stones for the individuals buried in the plot. John B. Deeble is buried with W. Arch Honeywell, Viola D. Honeywell and Maude T. Deeble (11-3-2001).

Deeble, Maude T., 1892 - 1992. Small stone on the Honeywell Deeble Plot. This plot is marked with a large stone labled "Honeywell Deeble," surrounded by four smaller stones for the individuals buried in the plot. Maude T. Deeble is buried with W. Arch Honeywell, Viola D. Honeywell and John W. Deeble (11-3-2001).

Evans, Ethel R., 1887 - 1975. Single stone set flush with the ground. Ethel Harden Read was the youngest child of Jacob Read and Mary Cevillah Harden. She is buried in the same plot with her parents; her second husband Gwyn Evans; her sister Grace, Grace's husband George Smith and their two children; and her brother Walter and his second wife Esta. Ethel's first husband was Charles Mitten (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Evans, Gwyn, 1894 - no date cut. Single stone set flush with the ground. Gywn Evans was born in Wales. He was the second husband of Ethel Harden Read Mitten. Gywn and Ethel are buried in the same plot with her parents Jacob and Mary (Harden) Read; her sister Grace, Grace's husband George Smith and their two children; and her brother Walter and his second wife Esta (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Harden, Mary Cevillah, see Jacob Read. Maiden Name is not given on the grave stone.

Honeywell, W. Arch., 1886 - 1949. Small stone on the Honeywell Deeble Plot. This plot is marked with a large stone labled "Honeywell Deeble," surrounded by four smaller stones for the individuals buried in the plot. W. Arch. is buried with Viola Honeywell, John W. Deeble and Maud T. Deeble (11-3-2001).

Honeywell, Viola D., 1884 - 1970. Small stone on the Honeywell Deeble Plot. This plot is marked with a large stone labled "Honeywell Deeble," surrounded by four smaller stones for the individuals buried in the plot. Viola D. Honeywell is buried with W. Arch. Honeywell, John W. Deeble and Maud T. Deeble (11-3-2001).

Large family stone inscribed with the name Jones, although there is no one with this surname on the stone. Individual inscriptions are on both sides of the stone (11-3-2001).

There are smaller stones for William J. and Caroline L. (11-3-2001).

Larkcom, Caroline, wife of Wm John Lewis, 1863 - 1939. (11-3-2001).

Lewis, Wm John Lewis, 1849 - 1928. Single stone. William John Lewis was married to Caroline Larkcom (11-3-2001).

Read, Esta A., 1883 - 1960. Single stone set flush with the ground. Esta A. Reed (this was her maiden name) was the second wife of Walter Wilson Read. She is buried in the same plot with Walter, his parents Jacob and Mary (Harden) Read; his sister Grace, Grace's husband George Smith and their two children; and his sister Ethel and Ethel's second husband Gywn Evans (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Read, Ethel Harden, see Ethel R. Evans. Maiden Name is not given on the grave stone.

Read, Grace, see George M. Smith. Maiden Name is not given on the grave stone.

Read, Jacob, 1847 - 1926; Mary C., 1853 - 1933. Large family stone inscribed on both sides. Jacob and Mary Read are on one side, their daughter Grace Read Smith and her husband George and her children are on the other side (see George M. Smith). Jacob Read was the son of John Matthews Read and Barbara Beck. His wife was Mary Cevillah Harden, the daughter of John Thorpe Harden and Martha Wilson. They moved to the Wilkes-Barre area from Warren County, New Jersey between 1883 and 1886. There are small marble markers set flush with the ground that are inscribed with their initials. These are set on the graves in the plot. Jacob and Mary's son Walter and his second wife Esta, and their daughter Ethel and her second husband Gwyn Evans are alsoburied in the family plot (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Read, Walter W., 1871 - 1932. Single stone set flush with the ground. Walter Wilson Read was the eldest son of Jacob Read and Mary Cevillah Harden. He is buried in the same plot with his parents Jacob and Mary (Harden) Read; his sister Grace, Grace's husband George Smith and their two children; and his sister Ethel and Ethel's second husband Gywn Evans. Walter's first wife, Mary Euphemia ("Mamie") Thomas is buried in Alabama. (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Reed, Esta A, see Esta A. Read. Maiden Name is not given on the grave stone.

Smith, George M., 1864 - 1940; Grace R., 1877 - 1990; Leola R, 1904 - 1924; George M. Smith, Jr., 1906 - 1961. Large family stone inscribed on both sides. The Smith family are on one side and Grace's parents, Jacob and Mary Read are on the other side. Grace Read Smith was the eldest daughter of Jacob Read and Mary Cevillah Harden. Her husband was George Melvin Smith, Sr. Both of their children are also buried in the plot: Leola Read Smith, who died unmarried and George Melvin Smith, Jr. (or "Mel"). His wife was Isabella Campbell, she is not buried in the cemetery plot. There is a military stone for Mel and a small marble marker set flush with the ground inscribed with Leola's initials. Grace's brother Walter and his second wife Esta, and her sister Ethel and her second husband Gwyn Evans are also buried in the plot (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).

Smith, George M., Pennsylvania, Lt Col US Army, World War II AROM, Jan 23 1906 - Dec 18 1961. Military stone for George Melvin Smith, Jr. (or "Mel"), son of George M. Smith Sr. and Grace Read (11-3-2001; 5-14-05).
