A Short History of Hanover Green Cemetery

In 1776, surveyors platted the land in the southern end of the Wyoming Valley. Settlement in this area was under the supervision of Captain Lazarus Stewart of the the Susquehanna Company. He named the area Hanover Township—it was one of the five original townships in the county. On 9 June 1776, Captain Stewart drew Lot 8 in the township. It was set aside by vote of the proprietors for use as a meeting house and burial ground. The area was also used as a drill ground for the local militia and was known as the "green." The area soon became known as Hanover Green. It was used from 1776 on as a cemetery. In 1825, a meeting house was built on the grounds. The meeting house is still within the cemetery and is now used as a chapel. A photograph of the chapel viewed from Main Street is featured above (photograph by Esther Doyle Read, 28 March 2003). The meeting house was recently restored and features the orignal locks and thumb latches on the doors, the hanging pulpit and sound board, and original kerosene wall lamps. The wide plank floors, an ornate balcony and wooden pews are still in place. A close up of the exterior door on the Main Street facade of the chapel is to the right (photograph by Esther Doyle Read, 28 March 2003). Barbara and Dale Shafer, the cemetery's sextons, have published an history of the cemetery entitled A History of Hanover Green Cemetery (undated and privately published). Copies of the booklet may be purchased from the Hanover Green Cemetery Office.
