LINESVILLE CEMETERY

Linesville Cemetery is located on Wallace Street in Linesville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. The cemetery appears to be a community cemetery. No church is currently located on the grounds. This is not a complete transcription of the cemetery. It is instead a selection of the stones within the cemetery, which were collected 9 July 2005 by Esther Doyle Read. There are 14 stones included in the transcription, representing 17 individuals. Several of the transcriptions include photographs of the grave stones. Unless otherwise stated, all photos associated with this page were taken by Esther Doyle Read on 9 July 2005. The above photograph is of the most unique stone in the cemetery. It markes the Schanck-Henlen family plot (photograph by Timothy J. Doyle, 9 July 2005). The cemetery is still in use.

Dickey, Orlando C., 1853 -1916; Kate M, 1857 - 1934. Kate McKay was the wife of Orlando Dickey. She was the daughter of Robert S. McKay and the sister of Nell McKay Stewart and Myrta Eloise McKay Coursen (wife of Melville "Ewing" Coursen). Kate raised her neice Roberta McKay Coursen after Myrta and "Ewing" Coursen died.

Hays, large family stone surrounded by nine smaller stones. Each of the smaller stones is for an individual buried in the plot. The smaller stones are from left to right in front of the large family stone: W. Carl Hays, Fannie B. Hays, John A. Hays. Behind the large family stone the smaller stones are from left to right: Garry C. Hays, Delbert C. Hays (not visible in photograph), Melvin J. Hays, Everett C. Hays, Marie S. Hays and R. Clair Hays. Marie S. Hays was born Susan Marie Coursen, the daughter of Melville Ewing Coursen and Myrta Eloise McKay. Her grandparents were Aaron Reed Coursen and Sarah Fonner of South Shenago Township and Robert S. McKay. Marie married Robert "Clair" Hays. They were the parents of five sons: Everett, Melvin, Adelbert (or Delbert), Garry and Donald. On 13 May 1928, Maire, Clair and all their sons, with the exception of Donald, died. The cause of their deaths is not known. They were buried together in the Hays family plot. Clair's younger brother Carl, who died at the age of 18 or 19 in 1921 was already buried in the plot. Clair and Marie's son Donald Christy Hays (who was 15 days short of his first birthday when his family died) was lived with his paternal grandparents John and Fannie Hays. However by 1940, Donald was once again orphaned. John Hays died in 1933 and Fannie died in 1940. Donald Hays married Jean Bruggeman on June 24, 1950. He has at least two sons—Garry and John Coursen.

Hays, Everett C., 1917 - 1928. Everett Clair Hays, son of Clair and Marie (Coursen) Hays. Born 1 December 1917 in North Shenago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, Delbert C., 1924 - 1928. Adelbert Carl Hays, son of Clair and Marie (Coursen) Hays. Born 5 February 1924 in North Shenago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, Fannie B., 1870-1940. Fannie was married to John Hays. They had at least two sons: R. Clair and W. Carl Hays. They raised their grandson Donald Christy Hays after the deaths of his parents and brothers.

Hays, Garry C., 1925 - 1928. Garry Coursen Hays, son of Clair and Marie (Coursen) Hays. Born 1 June 1925 in North Shenago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, John A., 1869-1933. John Hays and his wife Fannie were the parents of R. Clair and W. Carl Hays. They raised their grandson Donald Christy Hays after the deaths of his parents and brothers.

Hays, Marie S., 1895 - 1928. Susan Marie Coursen, Melville Ewing Coursen and Myrta Eloise McKay, wife of Robert "Clair" Hays. Born 15 July 1895 in Summit Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, Melvin J., 1919 - 1928. Melvin John Hays, son of Clair and Marie (Coursen) Hays. Born 8 October 1919 in North Shenago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, R. Clair, 1897 - 1928. Robert "Clair" Hays, son of John A. and Fannie B. Hays of West Fallowfield Township Crawford County, Pennsylvania, husband of Marie Coursen. Born 1897 and died 13 May 1928.

Hays, W. Carl, 1902 - 1921. W. "Carl" Hays, son of John A. and Fannie B. Hays of West Fallowfield Township Crawford County, Pennsylvania, brother of R. Clair Hays.

McKay, Kate, see Orlando Dickey. Maiden Name is not given on the stone.

McKay, Nell, see Fred B. Stewart. Maiden Name is not given on the stone.

Stewart, Claire M. 1893 - 1973; Harriet E., 1880 - 1978. Claire M. Stewart was the son of Fred B. Stewart and Nell G. McKay.

Stewart, Fred B., 1870-1851; Nell G., 1874 - 1951. Nell G. McKay was the wife of FRed B. Stewart. She was the daughter of Robert S. McKay and the sister of Kate McKay Dickey and Myrta Eloise McKay Coursen (wife of Melville "Ewing" Coursen). Nell raised her neice Susan "Marie" Coursen after Myrta and "Ewing" Coursen died.

Stewart, Robert N. 1904 - 1976; Irene H., 1904 - 2001. Robert Stewart was the son of Fred B. Stewart and Nell G. McKay.
