NEWTON CEMETERY

Newton Cemetery is located in Newton, the county seat of Sussex County, New Jersey. This is not a complete transcription of inscriptions. Instead it represents selected stones transcribed and photographed on 26 September 2005 by Esther Doyle Read. Photographs of the grave stones are included. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger image (use icon to enlarge the photograph). The cemetery is still active. There is no office on site.

Beck, Jehiel T., Jehiel T. Beck was a younger son of Jacob J. Beck and Elizabeth Lake. He grew up on a farm in outside of Hainesburg in Knowlton Township, Warren County. Jehiel married Rosaline Harris and the couple settled in Newton. They had one son, James Clinton Beck. The plot is marked by a large single name stone with one smaller stone for Rosaline. There is no stone for Jehiel. He died sometime after 1930. It is not known if he is actually buried in the plot.
Harris, Rosaline wife of Jehiel T. Beck, 1858 - 1929. was born June 1858 and died 1929, She and Jehiel were married in about 1881.

Bunnell, Jacob L. Jacob Lanterman Bunnell was the founder of the Blairstown Press, the first issue appeared on 7 February 1877. He sold the paper in 1883, but continued in the newspaper business for the rest of his life. He bought the Sussex Independent in 1885. He became part owner of the New Jersey Herald of Newton in 1888. His partner was his Uncle Thomas G. Bunnell, who is buried in the adjacent plot. In 1924 Sussex Independent merged with the New Jersey Herald. The paper was printed as the New Jersey Herald. Jacob was the president of the corporation that owned the paper, a position he held until his death in 1932.
Jacob L. Bunnell was married three times, but he never had any children. His first wife was Matilda "Jennie" Smith. She died in January 1878. Her place of burial is unknown. Two years later Jacob married her cousin Lucille Buckley. Lucille died in 1906 and was buried in this burial plot. Jacob married his third wife, Estelle Clark in about 1908. She died in 1931, Jacob died the following year. They were also buried in this plot. Jacob is buried between his second and third wife. The red flag in the photograph is for the Newton Fire Department which Jacob was a member of. In addition to his duties as a newspaper editor and fireman, Jacob was a President of the Sussex County Historical Society. His portrait hangs in the Society's headquarters, the Hill Memorial, in Newton, New Jersey.
Buckley, Lucille wife of Jacob L. Bunnell, Died 1906. Lucille was the daughter of Simon Wade Buckley and Jane Kimble. She was born circa 1850. She married jacob as his second wife in about 1879. Jacob's first wife, Jennie Smith was Lucille's first cousin. Jennie's parents were James Smith and Charlotte Kimble of Sparta.
Bunnell, Jacob L. Died Jan. 29, 1932. Jacob Lanterman Bunnell was born 15 July 1855, the son of Henry Bunnell and his second wife Mary Margaret Lanterman (daughter of Jacob Lanterman and Rachael Read). Jacob's parents, his step-mother and his maternal grandparents are buried in the J.I. Blair Cemetery on the ground of Blair Academy in Blairstown. His mother died when he was two years old. Jacob was raised in Blairstown by his father and step-mother Eleanor France.
Clark, S. Estelle wife of Jacob L. Bunnell, Died Jan. 6, 1931. Estelle was born circa 1863 in Illinois. She married Jacob as his third wife in about 1908.

Bunnell, Thomas G. Thomas G. Bunnell was an editor of the New Jersey Herald. He became associated with the paper in the 1850s and was appointed editor in 1867. In 1888, he became part owner of the New Jersey Herald with his nephew Jacob Lanterman Bunnell (son of his brother Henry), who is buried in the adjacent plot. Thomas Bunnell's plot includes a large monument inscribed with the names of Thomas, his wife Mary Ann Smith, and three of their children: Sarah Jane, Carrie and Willard. Smaller foot stones mark the individual graves. These can be seen in the photograph. In the foreground are footstones labeled W.B. (Willard Bunnell), C.N.B. (Carrie N. Bunnell), M.A.B. (Mary Ann Bunnell), missing from the photograph is the footstone marked T.G.B. (Thomas G. Bunnell). Just to the right of the monument is a footstone marked S.J.B. (Sarah Jane Bunnell).
Bunnell, Carrie N., daughter of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Bunnell, Born Jan. 4, 1861 - Died May 8, 1907. Carrie N. Bunnell was the second daughter of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Smith. She died unmarried at the age of 46. Her name is inscribed on the back of the monument.
Bunnell, Sarah Jane, daughter of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Bunnell, Born Jan. 13, 1859 - Died Jan. 4, 1864. Sarah Jane Bunnell was the eldest child of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Smith. Her name is inscribed on the side of the monument.
Bunnell, Thomas Gratton, Born March 14, 1834 - Died Sept. 15., 189- [no last number cut]; Mary Ann Smith, wife of Thomas G. Bunnell, Born Jan. 25, 1836 - Died May 3, 1898. Thomas Gratton Bunnell was the son of David Bunnell and Catherine Smith. He married Mary Ann Smith, the daughter of Jonas Smith and Sarah A. Decker. The couple had six children: Sarah Jane, Carrie, Alice A. Willard, John S. and Edith. Thomas and Mary Ann's names are inscribed on one side of the monument while the names of three of their children are inscribed on the other three sides of the family monument. These three children are Sarah Jane, Willard and Carrie.
Bunnell, Willard, son of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Bunnell, Apr. 2, 1865 - Died Aug. 19, 1903. Willard Bunnell was the youngest child of Thomas Gratton Bunnell and Mary Ann Smith. He died at the age of 38. Willard's name is inscribed on the side of the monument.

Luse, Andrew P., 1918 - 1990; Nancy D., no dates cut. Andrew Philetus Luse was the eldest son of Andrew O. Luse and Helen E. Shaw. He and his wife Nancy are buried near his parents and paternal grandparents A. Philetus and Ella (Huff) Luse. There is a military stone for Andrew on the plot (see below).
Luse Family, This plot contains the graves of Aaron Philetus Luse, his wife Ella Huff, their son Andrew O. Luse, and Andrew's wife Helen. Andrew's son Andrew P. Luse is buried nearby.
Luse, A. Philetus, 1853 - 1960. Aaron Philetus Luse was the only son of Aaron Luse and Mary Ann Kerr. He married Ella Jane Huff, the daughter of Barnet S. Huff and Hannah Divers. They had one child, a son named Andrew O. Luse, who is also buried in this burial plot. Aaron was either 106 or 107 years old when he died.
Huff, Ella J., his wife, 1859 - 1947. Ella Jane Huff was a daughter of Barnet S. Huff and Hannah Divers. Ella's brother, Ralph Huff, married Aaron Philetus Luse's first cousin Euphemia Gertrude Kerr.
Luse, Andrew O., 1888 - 1954. Andrew O. Luse was the only child of A. Philetus Luse and Ellen J. Huff. He married Helen E. Shaw, the daughter of Job J. Shaw and Anna M. Riegel. They had two sons: Andrew Philetus and Harvey S. Luse. Andrew Philetus is buried near his parents's graves.
Shaw, Helen E., his wife, 1888 - 1964. Helen E. Shaw, the daughter of Job J. Shaw and Anna M. Riegel.
Pullis, Theodor L. 1866 - 1938 Theodore Pullis was the son of David and Jane G. Pullis. He is buried in a plot next to his brother William. Theodore is buried with his wife Lillian M. Gray and their two youngest children—Florence and William.
Gray, Lillian M. his wife, 1871 - 1919 Lillian was the wife of Theodor Pullis. They are buried with their two youngest children—Florence and William.
Pullis, Florence M. 1896 - 1919 Florence was the youngest daughter of Theodor Pullis and Lillian Gray. She is buried with her parents and her younger brother William.
Pullis, William, Jr. 1900 - 1913 William was the youngest son of Theodor Pullis and Lillian Gray. He is buried with his parents and his older sister Florence.
Pullis, William Mar. 2, 1856 - Feb. 16, 1942; Elmira Current his wife, Sept. 17 1860 - Oct. 20, 1919, Clinton W., their son, Feb. 26, 1896 - Nov. 30, 1897. William Pullis was the son of David and Jane G. Pullis. He is buried in a plot next to his brother Theodore. William and Elmira had only one child, their son Clinton who died as a young child.
Smith, George L. Died Sept. 27, 1917, Aged 76 years; Catharine T. Johnson, wife of Geo. L. Smith, Died April 6, 1881, Aged 49 years. George L. Smith was born in Ohio. He made his living as a druggist and later as a traveling salesman. His wife Catharine T. Johnson was a native of New Jersey. She was the daughter of Samuel Johnson and Mary R. Trusdell.
Read, Edison J. 1911 - 2001; married Dec. 7, 1932; Margaret M. 1911 - 1986. Edison was the son of Marshall W. and Stella Read of Ledgewood, Morris County, New Jersey.

Smith, George L. This unusual monument is a near perfect rendition of a dead tree, down to the lichens growing around the base. It has inscriptions on two sides, in areas that look like areas that have lost the tree bark. The inscriptions are for George and Catharine Smith and for Catharine Trusdell.
Smith, George L. Died Sept. 27, 1917, Aged 76 years; Catharine T. Johnson, wife of Geo. L. Smith, Died April 6, 1881, Aged 49 years. George L. Smith was born in Ohio. He made his living as a druggist and later as a traveling salesman. His wife Catharine T. Johnson was a native of New Jersey. She was the daughter of Samuel Johnson and Mary R. Trusdell.
Trusdell, Catharine J. Died June 19, 1872, Aged 21 years. Catharine Trusdell lived with the Smiths in 1870 as a boarder and her name on the census is given as Kitty. Kitty was born in Janesville, Wisconsin and was teaching school in Newton when the census was enumerated. Her parents were William Trusdell and Martha Ann Janes. William Trusdell was a much younger brother of Mary R. Trusdell. He had gone west to Wisconsin where he met and married Martha Ann Janes a native of Northampton, Masschusetts. Kitty Trusdell and Catherine Johnson Smith were first cousins.

Titman Family This group of burials includes, Clark and Chauncey Titman and Minnie Titman Conner. Clark and Chauncey were brothers. Minnie's relationship is unclear. She is buried next to Chauncey and may have been his wife. Clark and Chauncy had one sister named Martha who was born in about 1873, 14 years before Minnie was born.
Connor, Minnie Titman 1887 - 1944. Her relationship to Clark and Chauncey is unclear. She may have been Chauncey's wife.
Titman, Chauncey D. 1879 - 1929. Clark was the youngest child of Baltis and Sophia Titman of Swartswood.
Titman, Clark J. 1875 - 1919. Clark was the eldest son of Baltis and Sophia Titman of Swartswood. He appears to have never married.

Unknown Last Name, Margaret M., see Edison J. Read.
Unknown Last Name, Nancy D., see Andrew P. Luse.
