SWAYZE CEMETERY

Swayze Cemetery is located on New Jersey Route 519 to the south and west of the village of Hope. According to Snell's 1881 History of Warren County, this cemetery is also known as Swayze burying ground and contains the graves of members of the following families: "Swayze, Hoit, Winters, Hildebrandt, Osborn, Dill, Archer, Harris, Weaver, Miller, Cypher, and other families in that locality." This is not a complete transcription of the cemetery. It is instead a selection of the stones within the cemetery, which were collected on 26 September 2005. There are 25 stones included in the transcription, which represent 27 individuals.

The top photograph is of the main gate into the cemetery. Route 519 is behind me. The center photograph is an overview of the cemetery from along Route 519. The final photograph is a view of the Edward Swayze, Sr. family plot facing the main gate and route 519. And yes, there is a herd of sheep in the cemetery. The farmer who owns the land pens sheep in the cemetery. The grass is cut by the sheep (which is a vast improvement over the cemetery's condition in the past). If you visit the cemetery be sure to close the gate behind you upon entering and leaving the cemetery. These sheeep are Jacobs sheep, a rare old English variety. All photographs were taken on 26 September 2005 by Esther Doyle Read. Click on the photograph and then on the icon on the following page to enlarge the image.
