Thompson, Jonathan S. Elder Jonathan S. Thompson arrived in Warren County in 1824. He and Abigail Roberts were pastors in the Christian Church (a denomination that has since merged with other Protestant denominations such as the Brethern and United Church of Christ). Together Thompson and Roberts founded the First Christian Church of Johnsonburg in 1826. The Church was located in Johnsonburg in Frelinghuysen Township. A large portion of the church's early members were also members of the Read clan. One of the Deacons of the church was Isaac Read, Sr. When Thompson's first wife Mary died in 1829, she was buried behind the plot that was later used as the final resting place of Isaac and Mary Read. Thompson had four wives. He married Sarah Haug as his second wife about a year after his first wife's death. Sarah died about a year later and was buried next to Mary Thompson. J.S. Thompson's third wife was a widow named Jane Drake. Jane was a daughter of Samuel Read and Maria Freese, who are buried at the top of the hill in Union Brick. When Jane died in early 1837, she was buried with her first husband, George W. Drake, in Swayze Cemetery in Hope Township. Thompson left Warren County after Jane's death. He was pastor of several Christian churches in New England and finally settled in the Rochester, New York area. He died there in 1866. It is assumed that he and his fourth wife Susan are buried in New York.

Thompson, Mary. In Memory of Mary, wife of Elder Jonathan S. Thompson, who departed this life Feb 2, 1829 aged 37 years, 5 months, and 1 day. The months of affliction are oer, The days and the nights of destress, We see her in anguish no more. She's gained her happy release. Then let us forbear to complain, That she is now gone from our sight, We soon shall behold her again, with new and redoubled delight. Footstone is labeled "M.T.".

Thompson, Sarah. In Memory of Sarah, wife of Elder Jonathan S. Thompson, who departed this life, September 13th 1831, aged 40 years and 12 days. Great God, we own the sentence just, And nature must decay, We yield our bodies to the dust, To dwell with fellow clay, Yet faith may triumph oer the grave, And trample on the tomb, Our Jesus our Redeemer lives, Our Lord our Savior comes.
