Small birds die easily in bad air. For many years, miners took small birds, often canaries, with them into the mines to warn them when the air became bad. Unfortunately this was very hard on the birds.
Now all the small song birds of the Earth can serve as the mine canaries for the entire environment. Each year a detailed census of migrating birds is taken. In changing climatic conditions, both the number of individual birds of each species and the patterns of migration change.
Although this is a difficult subject for students, it is a very important one. There a number of questions that need to answered for this concept to be effective. What can be learned from the current data being taken on migrating birds? What new data is needed to better understand the relationship of birds and climate? How can the legions armature birders build a scientifically valid data set?
