- What is RSI
Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI is any one of a large number of ailments including carpel tunnel syndrome and many other chronic pains. RSI usually results from repeating small stresses to the body hour-after-hour and day-after-day.
RSI is afflicting a large number of people who use computer terminals for hours each day. RSI years to develop and at least many months for recovery. It has put the careers of many people at risk.
- Preventing RSI
Dr. Pascarelli and Ms. Quilter's seven point common sense program (see reference below) to address RSI problems covers:
- See a physician if you have pain.
- Manage your pain to reduce it.
- Work on your posture.
- Do preventive exercises.
- Position yourself correctly.
- Pace yourself.
- Have patience.
Good design of your computer furniture helps in two of these
steps, posture and position. Good furniture is therefore not a
cure-all but is an important step to prevention or recovery when
included in a larger program.
- Woodware and RSI
We will give priority to desks for people suffering from RSI. We
give special attention to customizing their designs. If the
sufferer's friends and family can pay for the materials, we will
work through the Internet to find an amateur woodworker in your
area to build the desk. Help us prove that the Internet can have
a heart. We usually wave our design fee in such cases.
If you are already suffering pain, then see a doctor. Doctors in
both industrial and sports medicine have special training for
handling this type of injury.
If you are seeing a doctor or physical therapist, then take their
advice in the selection of your computer furniture. We want to
know their recommendations. Particularly important are
keyboards, keyboard heights, chairs, and monitor heights.
We cannot promise that our designs will cure you or even provide
absolute protection. We do promise to help you build a desk that
suits your needs.
