Virtue

Some do, some don't. I don't if someone around me might be offended. Most at my chapel don't, or rarely. If I got a missions position like I want, I may give it up all together to avoid any controversy.

One of my fondest childhood memories was crawling up into my Father's lap while he read the Bible in this study. I would read aloud for him sometimes. I was so exposed to King James English that I didn't realize that it was really different from modern English. Anyway, my Dad often would pour a glass of Peach Schnapps or Scotch when beginning a Bible Study. When he finished, he would drink it. I tried a little once, but my juvenile taste buds didn't like it.

In retrospect, I am sure he was savouring a Christian Liberty (All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable -Paul). He grew up Baptist, but converted to a small, somewhat legalistic denomination that did allow drinking. He even took to making wine at home (it's legal). We had our own grapevines out back, and I did the European experience thing and stomped grapes in huge plastic garbage cans with my bare feet (yes, I washed first). Another fond memory.

In my own defense, I have to say that I've never been drunk. I'm not saying that even one shot doesn't have any physiological effect on me. I'm just careful to drink moderately, on a full stomache. I did feel sick once from a mixed drink, though.

Besides, there's always Jesus' first miracle. As the guest said to the host, why did you save the best wine for last? Jesus always makes good things. By the way, if you want to e-mail a long convoluted explanation of why the Bible doesn't mean "wine" when it says wine, spare me. It says wine. I believe it was wine. Occam's Razor and Hermeneutics agree.

I feel so nostalgic, I think I'll visit home.
