Welcome to JPL's Home Page!

We're not NASA's JPL...Our initials stand for JAPAN PLANETARIUM LABORATORY, INC. We are Japan's leading producer of high quality astronomic images. Many are painted by our founder and president, Shigemi Numazawa. Recently, Shigemi captured some fascinating images of the comet Hyakutake with his camera.

The top portion consists of a sequence of 3 exposures that show a piece of the comet breaking off, temporarily altering the shape of the tail.

Last year (1995) Shigemi spent a lot of nights on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, working with a television crew from NHK, Japan's public television network. There is a page dedicated to this project. Shigemi Numazawa is Japan's foremost astronomical illustrator and photographer. Keep an eye out for his creations in Sky & Telescope Magazine !
